The Shchusev State Museum of Architecture presents the exhibition “Nikita Makarov: in propria persona”. Visitors will see a kind of "restart" of the exhibition project: the opening was originally scheduled for the end of November, but the pandemic restrictions have made serious adjustments. The exhibition will run from February 5 to March 7, 2021.
Nikita Makarov is a Moscow artist, master of landscape and a prominent representative of the Moscow academic school of painting. The exposition will be an attempt by the author to comprehend the events of history and the world experience of painting through the prism of his own plastic searches, dialogues and intersections with the art of the twentieth century. The artist will appear before the audience "in person" (this is the translation of the Latin name of the exhibition).
The exhibition features about 30 works, mainly coastal and urban views of different regions of Italy and Spain, painted by the artist over the past two years.
Nikita Makarov: “The uncertainty of the future is frightening and burdensome, thus determining my today’s passism, which is characteristic of my works before. This is not an escape, this is a return to that ideal utopian world of the past. This is the desire to know the deep processes of harmony between the world and man in it, or without it. To reach a meditative, constructive state, and in it become a demiurge-participant of the past, and not a dumb contemplator of the present… ”.
Makarov works in a rare technique of tempera on a wooden basis, close to Russian medieval painting. Perhaps this choice is explained by the fact that one of the specializations of the artist’s education is monumental art; at the same time, many of Nikita Makarov’s works can be called jewelry: they require special meticulousness, skill, and durable wood materials.
In his works, he enters into a kind of dialogue with the brightest representatives of French post-impressionism and American modernism, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Seurat and Edward Hopper. Parallels of comparisons of the pictorial language of these artists, chosen by Nikita Makarov as mentors and interlocutors, create an interesting, multifaceted dialogue.
The leitmotif of Makarov’s landscapes rhymes with statements about E. Hopper’s own creative process (1882-1967): “When I paint, my goal is to very accurately transfer my innermost impressions from nature to the canvas”. “Accuracy of transfer” and “innermost impressions” allow the artist to subtly differentiate the nuances and details of each of the landscapes, while preserving the authenticity of his own impressions and, at the same time, the anonymity of the depicted. Despite the versatility of Makarov’s landscape compositions, each of them has a specific name and is easily identified. And in each specific image of the southern nature, the author’s own person is visible.
