Get AI predictions, free banned captives with an AR app, and hear the trees in the plastic jungle play techno. The super-technological futuristic mystery exhibition New Nature from the famous art duo Recycle Group is an exciting journey through the territory of the Winery.
The art duo Recycle Group are trendsetters in the world of contemporary art. Laureates of the Kandinsky Prize have repeatedly represented Russia at the Venice Biennale. True to form, in the new project, the artists are again passionate about the recycling of meanings, the study of cultural and visual codes. Their first retrospective exhibition in Moscow, like a complex computer game, opens three levels of the cyber future before the viewer. Synthesis of man and machine, digital immortality and total digital addiction, artificial intelligence that can no longer be distinguished from humans, virtual reality as a new religion and new values: engagement rates, number of views and likes. These are not all the topics raised by the Recycle Group in the New Nature project.
New Nature is high-tech art with augmented reality, dynamic installations, interactive and QR codes instead of labels. The viewer is offered a new format of interaction with art - a virtual and technological performance. Some of the exhibits can only be seen through the Recycle Group augmented reality app for Android or iOS. Especially for the exhibition on the izi platform. travel created a free audio guide.
The New Nature exhibition is a joint project of the Center for Contemporary Art Winzavod, the Triumph Gallery and the Manege Central Exhibition Hall (St. Petersburg). Her route runs through three spaces of the Winery at once: the Red Workshop, the White Workshop and the Large Wine Storage. Thanks to the ancient architecture and the special energy of the halls, the project has additional meanings.
RED WORKSHOP: WEB 2.0 ARTIFACTS
The journey to fantasy worlds begins in the Red Workshop. The topic of the section is “recycling as reincarnation”. Here the Recycle Group reinterprets classical culture and history. The Open Source installation (2021) is the hallmark of the Recycle Group. This is a modern version of the high reliefs of the ancient Greek Parthenon. In the eternal battle, not centaurs and lapiths met here, but people with bots. Among the exhibits there are ancient sarcophagi converted into garbage containers. Users lie in them with phones in their hands, like Egyptian mummy pharaohs.
WHITE SHOP: COMPUTER VISION
In the Bely Workshop, artists explore the specifics of "machine vision", replacing the human gaze with a digital code. The giant work "Zero" occupies the central place here. The colored luminous arch of servers is the point of beginning and end, everything and nothing. A symbol of the already completed transition to a new digital world.
As in Wachowski’s iconic "Matrix", the multimedia installation "Probability" (2021) offers the visitor two options for the development of the future, two doors - blue and red. By scanning the QR code in the application, you can choose a negative or positive scenario for an individual prediction from artificial intelligence. AI does not read from the palm - it studies the user’s digital footprint in social networks.
GRAND VINEARIAN: A VIRTUAL CONTINUUM
To get to the third section of the exposition, you need to go down to the Big Wine Storage. The entire space is occupied by the colorful and noisy Forest of Expired Links (2021). On each sheet of total artificial thickets, already inactive transitions to sites are printed. And the giant stumps of ancient sequoias work on the principle of the theremin: with a light touch, they play electronic music. Here nature and technology merge into one.
To read AR installations, you need a smartphone and a special Recycle Group application. Volunteers help set it up. Blocked Content’s work was first presented by Recycle Group at the Venice Biennale in 2017. Sinners are walled up in blocks of ice - blocked users. They try to take pictures of invisible food, fight among themselves for likes and beg to return them to online activity. And the installation "Human Template" shows a representative of a new species of Homo Virtualis in its natural habitat - in augmented reality.
The futuristic project New Nature is the format of the exhibition of the future. The use of digital technologies becomes a necessary condition for contact with the work, and the viewer becomes an active participant in the creative process.
