On July 10, the exhibition “SIMPLE TOY” opens at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art.
The project will present to the public the amazing phenomenon of nesting dolls, which is not only a symbol of national traditional art, but also an example of intercultural ties and influences.
The appearance of nesting dolls in Russia is associated with pan-European interest and a passion for Japanese art at the beginning of the 20th century. As part of the artistic direction in art, known as “modern” and associated with a highly professional authorial beginning, the nesting doll was able to become an absolute image of national traditional art, both in Russia and abroad.
The famous chiseled doll appeared in the late 1890s. in the workshop "Children’s Education" in Moscow. The creators of the nesting dolls were hereditary turner V.P. Zvezdochkin (1876 - 1956) and a prominent representative of the neo-Russian trend in art, the famous artist S.V. Malyutin (1859 - 1937).
For the first time the toy was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, where it received high recognition from the public and was awarded a bronze medal. Further mass production in the workshops of Sergiev Posad, as well as, later, in other art centers, made the toy a recognizable national symbol.
The history of the development of Russian nesting dolls includes three periods: from the moment they appeared to the beginning of the 1930s. Matryoshka dolls become iconic works of their era, they amaze with the sophistication of their paintings, a variety of themes and forms. Wooden detachable dolls realistically “fix” the life of that time in the image of representatives of different classes, professions, and nationalities.
Since the mid-1930s until the end of the 1980s period of factory production of nesting dolls. The stylistics of the main - “mass”, “commercial” type nesting dolls are firmly fixed in the cities of Sergiev Posad, Semenov, in the village of Polkhovsky Maidan and the village of Krutets, as well as in the Moscow, Tver regions, in Bashkiria, Mordovia, Mari El and other regions.
The third period in the development of nesting dolls is from the beginning of the 1990s, the time of the so-called “author’s” nesting dolls. Matryoshka is becoming more and more “decorative”, being a kind of canvas for the deployment of entire plots, both timeless and relevant.
Matryoshka surprisingly organically combined the new artistic trends of the beginning of the 20th century and the traditional folklore images of Russian culture and art.
The exposition will include items from the funds of VMDPNI with the participation of the State Museum of Oriental Art and the Art and Pedagogical Toy Museum in Sergiev Posad.
Matryoshka is one of the symbols of Russia. The potential of this craft allows you to create new original works, interest in which exists to this day.
