A painter-painter at the forefront of avant-garde search, a man of a wide soul and soul of any society, passionate and bold in creative daring, keen on innovations and not recognizing old authorities - that was Aristarkh Lentulov, an artist who can be called one of the most striking experimenters of the Russian avant-garde. He was called the "artist of the sun", and the French - even the "cubist á la russe". In his work, the most daring and new artistic directions received expression - it was not without reason that he became one of the founders of the Jack of Diamonds society. But he found inexhaustible inspiration in a popular popular print, signboard, icon, and Old Russian architecture. The name of Aristarchus Lentulov can be safely put on a par with the greatest masters of European modernism of his generation, and today he is one of the most sought-after collectors around the world of Russian artists.
On the 135th anniversary of the artist’s Theater Museum. A. A. Bakhrushin presents the exhibition "The Mystery-Buff of Aristarchus Lentulov." The exhibition will cover all periods of his creative life and will be the first large-scale display of works over the past 30 years - only about 250 works from 20 museums in Russia. The exhibition will present to the general public and works from 11 private collections, including the collection of the great-grandson of the artist Fyodor Lentulov.

The exhibition offers a special look at the work of Aristarchus Lentulov - through the prism of theatricality. One of the main principles of constructing the exposition - a combination of easel, pictorial and graphic works, and works for the theater - allows you to see the integrity of the artist’s creative path and the relationship of these types of arts, so characteristic of Russian culture in the first third of the twentieth century. Theatricality was characteristic of Lentulov’s work even before joining the theater in 1914: it was in the artistic ease of “trying on” various styles of fine art from the beginning of the 20th century from impressionism to futurism, in the exaggerated decorativeness and brightness of its palette, in the use of collage and lighting effects inherent theatrical practice.
His paintings are distinguished by expressiveness and expression and an unforgettable bold combination of motives of traditional Russian architecture with the newest language of art, which has become the main distinguishing theme of Lentulov, his "horse". Many will remember the famous panels - Moscow churches sparkling with colored domes, bathed in the sun and as if spilling the waves of the bell ringing. By the way, in 2016, Lentulova Street appeared in Moscow, praised by him, in the area of the former industrial zone of ZIL.
Theater Museum A. Bakhrushin in the framework of the exhibition will show about 70 sketches of costumes and sets for more than 10 theatrical productions, including “Windsor pranks” / 1916 /, “Stranger” / 1918 /, “Tales of Hoffmann” / 1919 /, “Crying Rachel "/ 1924 /," Stepan Razin "/ 1925 /," The Spanish Priest "/ 1935 /," Ilya Muromets "/ 1939 / and others, as well as the famous model for the production of" Demon "/ 1919 /, for which Lentulov was awarded the golden medals / Diplôme de Medaille d’Or / at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925. An important addition to the exposition will be theater posters, programs, photographs of performances that Aristarkh Lentulov worked on, book and music covers from the museum’s collection and the artist’s family. A number of exhibits will be presented to the general public for the first time.
“The exhibition covers the artist’s creative path from the late 1900s to the early 1940s and will allow him to see together a number of significant works for the artist, to trace the development of his creative language. For example, the artist’s wife Maria Lentulova appears in portraits every time in a new look and in the “mask” of a new artistic style. The period of the 1920s-1930s will be represented by portraits, landscapes and plots on an industrial theme, reflecting Lentulov’s constant interest in contemporary events and also meeting the laws of stage performance, ”says curator of the exhibition Svetlana Jafarova.
"Theatricality code" is also in the name of the exhibition. The play by Vladimir Mayakovsky, “The Mystery Buff”, called the author of the “Dear Revolution”, first staged in 1918, defined and consolidated the figurative and intonational component of post-revolutionary art. And although Aristarkh Lentulov was not an artist of this performance, the “mystery buff” genre reflects his artistic credo. It is not for nothing that Mayakovsky said that Lentulov in painting does what he himself does in literature.
“The exhibition“ Mystery Buff Aristarchus Lentulov ”will be a logical continuation of the exhibition idea of the Bakhrushinsky Museum, launched by the exhibition“ Breakthrough. Russian theater and decorative art. 1870-1930 ”, held in December 2015 - February 2016 and enjoyed great success with the audience. The idea of the museum is to talk about Russian art of the beginning of the 20th century and show the artists of this time in all the diversity of their work, an integral part of which was work for the theater. The arrival of outstanding artists in the theater largely determined the originality and the highest artistic level of the national theater of this time, ”said the Director General of the Theater Museum named after A.A. Bakhrushina Dmitry Rodionov.
