From February 25 to May 1, the Gallery of Classical Photography will host Maxim Bedov’s Portfolio #2 exhibition. The Moscow photographer, whose work is kept in museums and private collections in Russia and abroad, makes prints using classical technology, without using digital processes. His photographs, which capture the beauty and harmony of nature, stand out with restrained expressiveness. These silent but majestic photographs refer to the creative discoveries of renowned American landscape photographer Ansel Adams and his followers. It is no coincidence that the name of the exhibition Portfolio #2 contains a direct reference to the master’s numbered portfolio. The exposition presents a series of 40 new works shot with a large format film camera. Most of them are made here, nearby: Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Tver, Kostroma, Ryazan region, Karelia, Moscow region.
Maxim Bedov, photographer:
“My main direction is landscape photography, and nature is good because it never repeats itself, even if you shoot the same place day after day with the same angle, you still can’t repeat it, it will change lighting, weather, seasons. Trust me, you won’t get a single repeat. And we are talking only about the purely primary component of the landscape, without touching on the issues of its interpretation, which is practically limitless in classical photography.
Mark Kobert, Art Director of the Gallery of Classical Photography:
“A photograph by Maxim Bedov is, at first glance, a creative escapism. Textbook compositions, time-consuming, requiring skill, shooting and printing technology. Thoughtful, contemplative attitude to the surrounding reality. By and large, this is an attempt to save oneself, ignoring the crazy world around. A position that requires constant effort. As Joseph Brodsky said in one of his essays, looking back is often a much more rewarding activity than looking forward.
