Surrealist artist Max Eduardovich Haase was born and lived in Moscow.
The creative path began in the studios led by Yu.G. Ryazhsky, L.Z.Tanklevsky, E. Bilyutin.
Engaged in manual weaving.
He worked as an artist in one of the industrial enterprises.
Such is scanty and laconic information, because the life of a talented artist passed away from officialdom.
The real name of the artist is Mikhail Mikhailovich Zanegin (1938 - 2013). He didn’t show his works to anyone, he never exhibited or sold them on his own, he didn’t participate in creative informal associations of the 1960s and 1970s, he was neither “for” nor “against”, he didn’t go under the canvas with bulldozers and didn’t open the workshop’s doors on a conditional signal for lovers of apartment exhibitions, did not communicate with Western diplomats.
Having received a gross rejection from a gallery owner, who told him the following verbatim: “You can’t even unfold it, nobody needs it today,” the artist was morally destroyed. Other gallery owners, his work is also not interested. So Max Haase was deleted from the contemporary artistic context, his faith in himself was destroyed by tactless, unprofessional people. This situation led to the fact that within himself, the artist has outlived interest in contemporary artistic life, found himself in spiritual emigration.
In 2013, it became known that Max Haase and Mikhail Zanegin are the same person (the pseudonym was taken intentionally so as not to experience any more humiliation and pain - this was another of the many hoaxes that accompanied the artist’s whole life). The desire to die as an individual, like Mikhail Zanegin, and to remain in art as a fictional character - Max Haase - was the main reason for this hoax, although the biographies of M. Zanegin and M. Haase practically coincide. The artist was present at his first exhibitions in the Asti Gallery (2004-2006) under his own name, but as a friend of Max Haase. He witnessed the great interest of the audience and the professional public, survived the recognition, but he himself was behind the curtains and never went encore. M. Zanegin was already sick then. Creativity ended for him in 1998. Anticipating the end, he entrusts the fate of his work to Nina Tikhonova and becomes like an outside observer, a friend of the artist M. Haase. It remains to them until the last days.
The cognitive value of M. Haase’s creativity is not a statement of the degree of similarity between a conscious reflection of reality, but an appeal to oneself through a psychological mechanism to feel the scale of the real world with its perpetual motion and interaction of countless objects and phenomena; ability to see "… the world of the earth at the height of fantasies…".
The artist’s creativity is truly unique: in the works there is an endless search for various techniques of execution or embodiment, intentions, creative solutions; an amazing variety of works - from painting, drawing, reliefs of sophisticated techniques to creating magnificent gorellen. Since the late 70s, starting with smooth-woven trellises, M. Haase has been developing the technique of embossed woven panels, coining them the name “gorellen” (relief + tapestry). These genuine works of art testify to the highest degree of talent of the artist. A huge impression is made by paintings, graphics and reliefs, interestingly transforming not only the outside world, but also the inner world. The artist’s perfect sensation of lines, shapes, harmony of color combinations and, of course, the aesthetic type of personality brought unpredictability, individual intonation, grace and attractiveness to the work, destroying the usual stereotype of surrealism perception - conflict, fear, horror. Examining the artist’s works, you are really convinced that “… beauty is eternal, and it can be clothed in a thousand forms…” (P. Gauguin).
M. Haase’s creativity can, of course, be evaluated in different ways: to argue, admire, accept or not accept; not to admit - it is impossible, for the artist was given a talent that excluded the path of epigonism.
Today, the master’s legacy is in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and private collections.
The exhibition in the Serpukhov Historical and Art Museum will be held from October 1 to November 15, 2015 in the Main Building of the Museum at the address: 87, Chekhov St., Serpukhov.
