On January 26, 2018, RETINA exhibition dedicated to Troparevsky Forest Park begins its work in Pavilion No. 16 “Hydrometeorology”. This is the exposition of the young artist Larisa Fedotova, the winner of the “TAKEOFF” project in the direction of “Videoart”. The curator of the exhibition is Olga Shishko.
In Latin, retina means “retina” - this is the inner multilayer shell of the eye that perceives and converts visual signals. The purpose of the artist is to explore human perception and the characteristics of human interaction with the changing space of the city. The place was not chosen by chance. Troparevsky Forest Park, on the one hand, is a completely mundane location among many green areas on the outskirts of Moscow. On the other hand, this place has a certain duality: it is both a part of nature and an environment for recreation and entertainment of people.
“For two and a half years, I flandered at night in different parts of the Troparevsky forest park at different times of the year. The process was recorded on an amateur camcorder. Then I carefully examined the video and individual frames. Many lighted fragments tried to form a single puzzle. Digital aesthetics was superimposed on my visual experiences… The city forest park is a place that a person supposedly leaves to connect with nature, while recoding it functionally, “socializing”. The primary, natural is partially “cultivated”: sawn, trimmed, thinned out by asphalt paths, decorated with drawings of giant humanized insects… The natural environment is filled with power markers - rules, prohibitions, signs… ”- comments the project Larisa Fedotova.
Video projections and sound accompaniment will prepare the viewer to rethink the familiar and therefore often inconspicuous and, possibly, help to look differently at their own everyday experience. Wandering around the exposition with a pocket flashlight, the viewer will have the opportunity to study photographs and objects of the exhibition and at the same time become part of the installation. For a deeper immersion in the author’s intention, the exhibition will present the layout of the book “Retina”, in which the artist shares her experience in comprehending the world.
Exhibition curator Olga Shishko:
“Larisa strives not only to cross the boundaries of perception of reality, but also to turn the act of vision into an intellectual experience. In the RETINA project, the artist points out the loss of the relationship between reality, perception and image. For the author of the project, art is the identification of points of contact between a person and the world. The artist continues to experiment with the definition of the boundaries of "internal" and "external", exploring the "new vision." Vision is no longer perceived as a geometric projection of the reflection of the visible world, it shifts to internal bodily sensations, such as touch and kinesthetics. ”
