On December 16, 2016, the Tempora Mutantur exhibition, dedicated to the 10th anniversary of KUTIKUTI, the world-famous Finnish comic book association, opens at the VINZAVOD Fermentation Shop. The exposition was prepared in 2015 and was first shown at home, in Finland, after which it toured Europe and the cities of Russia - from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg.
The KUTIKUTI Association appeared in Helsinki in 2005 and today unites 49 artists. Comic authors of this team from the very beginning focused on creating their own style. They explore the area at the junction of modern art and visual poetry.
The Tempora Mutantur exhibition contains works created especially for the KUTIKUTI anniversary. The comics are printed by silk-screen printing and reflect the current diversity of styles and methods of storytelling. The presented plots are diverse: from space travel to everyday sketches. Here, there are finished human-life stories and images close to abstract ones. At the same time, the comics themselves are more reminiscent of paintings or posters than simple drawings with captions. Each work has its own style, its own color scheme, its own author.
“Many people still think that comics are fun for children,” says Sami Aho, one of the authors of KUTIKUTI. - But we consider this genre as contemporary art. Although, personally, I am not against some “childishness” and playfulness, especially in working with color. ”
The WINZAVOD Center for Contemporary Art has repeatedly supported projects related to the art of comics - for example, for several years it was the main venue of the KomMissiya festival. This is also not the first experience of cooperation with international cultural institutions: the Tempora Mutantur exhibition was organized jointly with the Embassy of Finland in Russia. “Comics, like caricature, are a special genre, including contemporary art,” said Lina Krasnyanskaya, executive director of the VINZAVOD Foundation for Contemporary Art Support. - At the same time, Finnish comics are one of the most advanced in Europe. “They break the established traditions and stereotypes, can be both illustrations in the book, and political statements, short stories and real novels.”
The exhibition runs until January 15, 2017.
