From June 15 to September 25 in the exhibition hall of the Polytechnic at VDNH there will be an interactive exhibition of the leading artist representing technological art in modern Mexico, Tani Kandiani.
Exhibition "Codes. Sounds. Signs ”consists of reconstructed musical instruments and objects of sound-reproducing equipment. They do not just combine technology in one subject, but expand the boundaries of listening experience and destroy the primitiveness of the standard functionality of devices. The project of Tani Kandiani describes the forms of interaction between a musical instrument, a machine and a person - in the broadest sense, it is an investigation of the emerging language of modern technology. The original name of the project - “Five Phonical Etudes and Pause” - had a much more pronounced musical character than its “polytechnic” version.
The exhibition will feature the work "Sound stories", originating in the tradition of Mexican sound design from the time of radio shows, for the sound of which artists - noise players used a whole arsenal of instruments. There are 4 dome-shaped acoustic devices with surround sound system. Under the dome is a screen - the image on it visualizes the audio signal from each channel. The devices reproduce the sound design for three graphic novels, as well as for the picturesque work of the artist Ivan Edesa, entitled “Sahagun Informants”.
A digital adaptation of the pianola will also be shown where paper tapes are wrapped through an electrically driven drum system. The optical sensor reads the holes in the tape and sends a signal to the frequency generator, reproducing the notes specified by the perforation. The endless rotation of the pianol ribbon in five display cases resembles the movement of a conveyor.
Special mention deserves the project of a unique hybrid multi-channel organ combining acoustic and electronic elements, which was first presented at the Mexican Laboratorio de Arte Alameda and will be brought to the exhibition at the Polytech. The device consists of two keyboards - music and print. Every time someone uses the carriage return lever to print on a new line, the words written are voiced by a voice synthesizer. The musical keyboard is equipped with even more complex software: each key and each chord is programmed to play speech syllables, the total number of which is 1201 syllables - this is comparable to the process of learning a language. Speech sounds are assigned to keys and chords, and this allows you to record text using notes, turning it into a piece of music. This object is also notable for the fact that Russian philologists, a well-known Russian media artist :: vtol ::, and Alexey Nadzharov, a researcher at the New Music Studio of the Moscow Conservatory, were invited to Russify it.
Tanya Kandiani is Mexico’s most famous and iconic artist: in 2015, she represented her country at the Venice Biennale. The growing interest in the topic of the relationship between art and technology served as an inspiration for the creation of installations, mechanisms and sound landscapes. Kandiani’s work can be found in both private and public collections such as the MCA (Museum of Modern Art, San Diego), SDMA (Museum of Art of San Diego), Mexican Museum (San Francisco) and Deutsche Bank. He is a recipient of a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation for the Arts, as well as part of the Mexican National Authors System since 2012.
Working with the works of Tanya Kandiani is not the first example of the full-scale cooperation of the Polytechnic Museum and Mexico, the interaction of which can already be called strategic from the point of view of the cultural exchange of the two countries.
The exhibition "Codes. Sounds. Signs ”will be accompanied by a specially prepared parallel program (lectures, workshops, concerts). Its first event will be the experimental group “Plexus of Senses” of the program “Polytech. Science. Art: Science. Art. Technologies ”of the Polytechnic Museum with the participation of the artist Tanya Kandiani herself. The work of the group will be devoted to the issues of information transfer in the world of modern technologies, methods of interaction in multidisciplinary teams, where people often use completely different language codes in attempts to find a common understanding.
The experimental group will be held June 15-17, 2016 and a contest will be announced on June 1 for those wishing to participate in it. On June 17, at 20. 00, a public lecture by Tanya Kandiani will be held at the Polytechnic Museum, during which she will talk about her career. Admission to the lecture is free, by prior registration on the Polytechnic Museum website.
