October 7, 2016, at 16.00 in the exhibition hall of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (Lenin St., 103) will open the exhibition "Book of the artist. Orphic cosmogony ”from the collection of ROSIZO and private collections.
The exhibition project of Vasily Vlasov and Mikhail Pogarsky, which presents about 60 copyright objects and installations demonstrating the peculiar evolution of the artist’s book genre in today’s Russia.
According to the curators, the metaphorical “Solar System of Russian Literature” was compiled from the original books. Around the Sun-Pushkin, the planets Lermontov-Mercury, Mayakovsky-Mars and others revolve: curators likened the creative personality of various writers and poets to the freely understood characteristics of celestial bodies.
The very concept of “artist’s book” or artist’s book appeared in the early twentieth century and was associated with the work of futuristic artists. Today, like a hundred years ago, the “book of the artist” is a synthetic form of art, where in one object it combines different forms of creativity. These are unusual short-run and unique objects, sometimes created by the artist from incredible materials and their combinations using all kinds of techniques and complex technologies, and most importantly, all books are intended for reading.
Now, at the beginning of the XXI century, very different artists work in the genre of the “book of the artist” - it is difficult to combine them in any one style. Rather, we can talk about a set of areas of search - the genre itself provides a wide field for various preferences. First of all, the book in the genre of "the book of the artist" returns to itself qualities that disappear in modern mass production. This is an individual, artistically and technologically capacious design, and attention to the texture, and the possibility of tactile "reading". We can say that the artist’s book was a reaction to the explosive development of both mass and electronic literature and aims to preserve the completeness of the book as a cultural phenomenon. Each of the unique books is completely created by the artist, from the idea to the embodiment. The artist becomes the author of the text, the artistic solution, and also chooses the way the reader reads the book.
