From September 15 to October 7, the State Gallery on Solyanka will host a performative exhibition of artist-actionist Katrin Nenasheva.
Cargo 300 - stories of torture. In the mass consciousness, torture is associated more with the plot of the militants than with reality, because often they happen behind closed doors of cabinets and basements, without betraying themselves in the everyday life of most people. Nevertheless, in the modern world there are more and more of them. Over the past six months alone, dozens of high-profile reports of various torture in closed institutions appeared in the media.
In 2018, the artist Catherine Nenasheva and her relatives were subjected to it: “I stopped feeling my body, I could not find a place for myself in a new reality, and most importantly, I did not understand how to build relationships with a person close to me, who was tortured with me. I was interested in the question - how do people experience torture? This performance exhibition is a living experiment to comprehend personal experience. ”
The hardest part about torture is acceptance. How to live with this experience, how does it affect the body and change the optics of a world view? Catherine Nenasheva collected stories of people who survived torture and asked them to come up with performative actions that embody this experience. These stories are an attempt to understand how torture affects a person’s perception, his worldview and the feeling of his body. For the most part, the heroes of the exhibition are the parents and relatives of those who have experienced torture. In their ideas, they reflect on how violence affects the human connection between people.
The exposition of the exhibition consists of seven stories, seven performances, seven experiences and will be modified and supplemented throughout the work of the exhibition. And visitors will be able to take part in performances, becoming witnesses of experiences and subsequent adoption. The narrative practitioner Irina Moroz will also work as part of the exhibition, which will help viewers build their own history of the perception of torture and their attitude to them.
