The final exhibition of the season 2015/2017 "Caramel" will open at the young art center of the Center for Contemporary Art Winery "START" on April 13. Artist Ivan Khryashchikov explores the plastic properties of caramel confectionery. His experiments with this unusual material - a kind of exit into outer space. The author will create an entire universe in the exposition space: planetary systems, meteorites - all objects are made of caramel.
The exhibition on the START project is the debut of Ivan Khryashikov as an artist. Confectioner by education, he was engaged in author’s cakes, went to exhibitions and competitions until he became interested in caramel. Going beyond the scope of the craft took place at one of the Berlin pastry exhibitions. Instead of traditional sugar flowers, Ivan Khryashchikov presented to the public a black pillar of caramel with the inscription "Every time you copy someone else’s work without bringing in anything of your own, a particle of your soul dies." The experiment did not receive universal approval, but after this experience, Ivan seriously thought about how to engage in contemporary art.
The path of further development was suggested by the material itself. The first step is an attempt to preserve the caramel in its original form, to create an eternal sculpture. So a series of works arose with bottled multi-colored caramel. Each following appeared as a result of a study of the properties of the material. The collection of Ivan Khryashikov has caramel in glass, wood and porcelain. The bends that it takes when heated, cracks in its structure, reminded the artist of space objects. That is why at his exhibition on START he will create his own model of the universe. In addition to objects, a video will be presented at the exhibition in which color caramel is transformed to radio signals from planetary radiation.
Ivan Khryashchikov, artist: “In caramel there is a mystical naturalness, naturalness. I am interested in exploring the physics of caramel, studying its properties. How does it flow? How does it melt? How does it crack? I study caramel the way no one else has studied it, and this is akin to going out into outer space. ”
Caramel Ivan Khryashchikova, gaining new properties, becomes a full-fledged material for artwork.

Kirill Preobrazhensky, curator: “In the 20th century, it is common for artists to use unusual materials, including food, in their work. This is not only a definite challenge to public opinion, but also a method in modern art that formulates certain statements: for example, Joseph Boyce used wax, fat and honey in his sculptures, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres in his famous work “Untitled” (Placebo, 1991) presented lollipops as a metaphor for the body of his lover who died from AIDS, and these lollipops, that is, the body, were offered to all visitors of the exhibition to eat. Among recent bold attempts to include haute cuisine in the context of fine art, it is important to mention the invitation to participate in documenta 12 of the famous chef Ferrand Adria.
Ivan Khryashchikov independently discovered the unusual properties of the well-known material: in the process of researching this medium, he created individual mythology, a kind of “caramel cosmogony”. Finishing your season with such an unusual and experimental exhibition, I would like to wish young art in Russia a beautiful and sweet future. ”

The exhibition on the START site will allow the artist to conceptually present topics of importance to him. The project has been supporting young artists since 2008. Since that time, more than 50 solo exhibitions of aspiring authors have been organized. After participating in the project, they are successfully exhibited in Russian and foreign galleries and institutions.
