The exhibition “History of Russian Design 1917–2017” is the first exhibition in the history of modern Russia, which presents the best examples of Russian design of its three main periods: constructivism (1917 – early 1930s), the formation and development of the Soviet design system (1950–1980) and modernity (1990–2017). The main goal is to acquaint a wide audience with the history of domestic industrial design from the avant-garde to the present, showing the most characteristic examples in one exhibition, including those related to the Tyumen region.

The curators of the exhibition project are Alexandra Sankova, director of the Moscow Museum of Design, Olga Druzhinina, development director of the Moscow Museum of Design, art historian, author of many publications on Soviet and European design.

As part of the opening, there will be a round table discussion “Design of the urban environment of Tyumen” with the participation of Tyumen specialists and representatives of the administration, which will discuss the current design code of Tyumen and its development, as well as the transformation of the design of the urban environment in the process of changing the city.

Especially for the professional community and a wide audience, the curators developed an educational program. Residents of the Tyumen region will be able to attend lectures for free and learn about industrial design, graphic design of Tyumen and the formation of the architectural appearance of the city.

During the exhibition, residents of Tyumen will be invited to supplement the existing exhibition. On a competitive basis, a competent jury will select items for the exhibition. For consideration may be presented clothes, household items and souvenirs manufactured industrially from the mid-1960s to the end of the 1980s. Each object should be interesting from the point of view of the history of design, for example, reflect the trends of the period, be developed by a famous designer, released in a limited edition or timed to coincide with an important event. The dates of the contest are from August 26 to October 26.

Industrial and graphic designers are invited to participate in the project. Samples of their best developments will be presented at the exhibition, which will expand the residents’ ideas about the history of development and the achievements of the design industry in the region.

Olga Druzhinina, development director of the Moscow Museum of Design and curator of the exhibition: “History of Russian Design 1917–2017” is a unique project that first shows the history of domestic design in “dynamics”. We talk about its three main periods and show the connection between them: significant projects of constructivist artists of the 1920-1930s; the development of Soviet designers of the 1960-1970s, which was much ahead of time; the work of contemporary Russian designers, continuing the traditions of their predecessors. The exhibition was conceived as a “traveling” educational project, which is why we are preparing a lecture program for each city with the participation of representatives of the local design community. We hope that in Tyumen the exhibition will unite everyone who is interested in design - both amateurs and professionals. ”
