Four organizers of the project (three of which are jewelry artists themselves) collected the work of more than 80 participants from around the world for a unique exhibition in terms of scale and composition of contemporary jewelry on the theme of gender stereotypes and feminism.

What does a Russian viewer imagine when he hears the phrase “jewelry exhibition”? Faberge Reserves, Lambada Market or Gem Fair? The project “March 9” offers to escape from the usual connotations and take a look at what Western jewelry and art jewelry are called in the West: independent conceptual jewelry that occupies an intermediate niche between fashion and contemporary art. From the fashion and classical jewelry art, this genre borrows a close relationship with body and clothing, and from modern art takes complete freedom of materials and forms, as well as the ability to speak on any current agenda.

The topic of gender stereotypes in one way or another affects everyone, and jewelers are no exception. Jewelry is considered something purely feminine, and therefore for many years it was considered mainly by the male art community at best as an investment, but not as an independent art form. The shift occurred in the sixties of the twentieth century, and since then contemporary jewelry has been finding more and more place in museums and galleries of modern art every year. The project "March 9" wants Russian viewers to finally get acquainted with this genre.

Katya Rabei is a jewelery designer and critical jewelry theorist. A graduate of the Israeli college of Shenkar majoring in jewelry design in 2017 and the historical and philological faculty of the Russian State Humanitarian University in 2012.
