In Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Nostalgia”, the idea that kindred spirits, when combined, form an inseparable whole is one red thread, one plus one equals one.
For the couple of two Moscow artists, the coming 2015 is a fateful milestone. This is the year of the 25th anniversary of living together in art, the year of the 50th anniversary of I. Komov and January 21 - the most important date, the anniversary of family life. The exhibition is dedicated to this event.
With all the individuality of the artistic language and the path in art, both authors share common principles of creativity. First of all, this is a constructive understanding of painting, where the instruments for expressing the image are: a rhythmic composition of painted surfaces; space dynamically developed in the picture plane; clear color enclosed in a clear form; devotion to a living full-scale impression. The art of both artists is rooted in ancient Russian monumental painting, French Fauvism and the art of Russian emigration of the twentieth century.
Both authors are vivid representatives of two creative dynasties, which for the first time they combine with their works in this exposition. Despite the fact that artists have been working side by side for a quarter of a century, this is their first general exhibition in Russia. In addition to personal ones, their small exhibitions have already passed together, both of them participated in the anniversary NSSA Salon in the Louvre, but this exposition is their first major joint project.
Both painters are members of three unions: the Moscow Union of Artists, the Union of Artists of Russia, the Creative Union of Artists of Russia. Ilya Komov is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts, laureate of the Silver Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts, Gold and Silver medals of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia, author of more than 35 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Russia and abroad. The works are presented in museum and private collections in several countries, including the collection of ex-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, leader of the Indian National Congress, Sonya Gandhi. Olga Motovilova-Komova is the author of more than 30 solo exhibitions in Russia and abroad, a repeated winner of exhibitions and competitions, winner of the Gold Medal of the Creative Union of Artists and Diplomas of the Russian Academy of Arts. The author of murals of architectural art objects in Russia and abroad. For painting a wooden wall in the city of Tutaev, Yaroslavl region, was awarded the prize of the city hall. The artist’s works are stored in museum and private collections in Russia and abroad.
The art of two artists, who are also close people, is combined into an exposition, which, despite the difference of two temperaments and hobbies, organically develops together, bringing joy to people in our time of total misunderstanding and tragic disunity.
The words of the son of one of Tarkovsky’s heroes again sound in my memory: “Dad, is this the end of the world?” No! Because the whole exists, because “one drop plus one more drop forms one big drop, not two,” because one plus one is equal to one - and that means we can understand each other! And note by note, like a drop by drop, like heart by heart, the Ode “To Joy” will sound, opening before the viewer “an opportunity to reach a new spiritual height”.
