Igor Petrov - a wonderful master of landscape painting and a virtuosic plein air - a member of the Union of Artists, professor of the I. Repin Institute on February 15 for the first time opens a retrospective exhibition in the Raphael Hall of the Museum of the Academy of Arts. It is precisely the landscape that dominates the artist’s work, revealing the extraordinary nature of his personality and intellect. The landscape for the artist is a microcosm, an expression of his philosophy, attitude to life, attitude, aesthetic addictions and, of course, falling in love with beauty.
The art of the author is distinguished by a high level of professional skill and a bright personality of the artistic style. The trepidation of the picturesque fabric, the light-color grace of the palette, the lyricism and the musicality of the sound of images are characteristic features of the author’s pictorial manner. Creative freedom, ease of writing is undoubtedly the result of a brilliant education, a close study of the heritage of his favorite masters of the Russian and European schools, and, of course, the lessons of a common great teacher - Nature.
In essence, Igor Petrov is a romantic poet. This determines the content of his work. The author does not start from external narration, but from immersion in the inner world of his own feelings and sensations. And it is they, the feelings, that fill the works with inner light energy, mood, breathe life into them, create what is called the “soul”. This trembling joy and light sadness also captivate the viewer.
In the series My Petersburg, the city will appear in the author’s refraction: poetic, bright and sublime, and sometimes melancholic and even piercingly dramatic. In this city, everything everyday, small, minute, as if dissolved in azure halftones and color script. The lyrical motifs of the suburban palaces with nostalgic reminiscences form a charming series of paintings by the Shadows of the Past. In them - a feeling of some mysterious, mystical connection with the beautiful that has long and irrevocably disappeared, but lives in our soul. This aura and style are partly in tune with the traditions of the world of art.
In the series “The genius of the place” - motifs that inspired the author in Venice, Bruges, Evora, Toledo and other places. The artist sensitively perceives and conveys their spirit, mystery, history and beauty. The atmosphere of these landscapes mesmerizes with spirituality and coloristic virtues.
Igor Petrov - a brilliant master of the open air and a great connoisseur of the ancient Black Sea region, historical, archaeological and memoir literature of the Crimea - creates a series of paintings “My Tavrida”, in which, as if rediscovering ancient cities, monuments, the delightful beauty of the region. These masterly written, drunk by the sun and wind conquer the radiant atmosphere, a sense of joy and flight. The romanticism of Petrov’s “historical” still lifes reflects his artistic preferences, refined taste and horizons. The subjects are lovingly selected and studied by the author and immersed in the inner essence of the world of things.
The portraits and sketches presented at the exhibition open up other facets of his creative personality, confirming the high culture of painting and the brilliant professionalism of the author. The artist’s enthusiasm for the beauty and perfection of the universe, his thoughts on harmony are invariably transmitted to the audience, regardless of the degree of their sophistication in art.
