Igor Petrov. The spirit of the place
Igor Petrov was born in 1951 in Leningrad. Received professional education at a secondary art school at the Institute. I.E. Repin (from 1963 to 1969), then at the Institute. I.E. Repin (workshop of Professor V.M. Oreshnikov from 1969 to 1975). In 1978, the artist began teaching at his native university, which continues to this day. Since 2003, I.V. Petrov - professor of the department of painting and composition.
The exhibition will present about 60 bright and distinctive landscape works of the artist, covering the thirty-year period of his work (from 1986 to 2017). Petersburg, its historical suburbs, the divine Tauris, Paris, Venice, Toledo and other European cities, in the interpretation of Igor Petrov, will appear before the viewer in new, sometimes unexpected images. Gray cloudy Petersburg in the artist’s paintings is a bright city filled with energy and vitality; Crimea is an enchanted protected area where historical, poetic, ethnographic layers of cultural heritage come to life in front of the viewer.
Igor Petrov. Landscape with a red house
The originality of Igor Petrov’s landscapes is in their special personal, and even intimate intonation. Each landscape is a unique range of emotional, intellectual, spiritual, picturesque impressions of the author. Thus, the artist embodies on the canvas that subtle, but piercing sensation, which is commonly called genius loci, the spirit of the place.
What forms a unique genius loci of cities, streets, buildings? What helps a person to understand the spirit of a place? How does an artist find a picturesque embodiment of such a complex and multifaceted experience? Each of the visitors to the exhibition, Igor Petrov, will be able to try to find answers to these questions and, in addition, compare his perception of familiar places with the artist’s vision.
A decorative manner close to French post-impressionism, captivating dullness and luminosity of the paint layer, exquisite texture, freedom and variety of painting techniques will also interest both amateurs and professionals.
The exhibition is open to visitors from August 18 to September 10, 2017.
