Literary works are a source of inspiration for the artist. This is clearly demonstrated by the exhibition “Visible Image”, which will open on October 1 at 16.00 in the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum (main building, 5 Lenin St.). The exhibition includes about 50 works made in a wide variety of graphic techniques: incisor engraving, etching, lithography, watercolor and gouache.
The history of the book is inextricably linked with the history of fine art. The first manuscript books were created by artists. They were the creators of the font, and decorations, and drawings. The artist helps the reader to enter the world of a literary work, it is better to feel it. The difficult tasks of illustration were successfully handled by the authors represented at the exhibition of graphic sheets.
In the triptych of the famous graphic artist Alexander Mikhailovich Muravyov, dedicated to the old Russian literary monument “The Word of Igor’s Campaign”, the artist turns to the art of Russian icon, Russian book miniature, at the same time the images of Prince Igor, Bayan the Prophet, Yaroslavna are monumental, significant.
Pushkin’s exhibition opens with a portrait of the poet, made by graphic artist N.I. Utkin (the keeper of the engraving in the Hermitage) in 1838 using the technique of incisor engraving from the famous portrait by OA Kiprensky. Illustration for the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" by the artist D.I. Kiplik (1865-1942) is made in black watercolor and ink. Amazing in the finer points of the woodcut stroke to Pushkin’s novel “The Queen of Spades” by the Soviet artist G. D. Epifanov (1900-1985), St. Petersburg is immersed in the gloomy atmosphere of the first half of the 19th century.
Engravings by Simmons are based on the works of M.A. Zichy, these two graphic sheets were included in the collection of Vladimir Platonovich Sukachev, which marked the beginning of the formation of the collection of the Irkutsk Art Museum. The Sukachev family was also sensitive to the literary works of M.Yu. Lermontov, preserved evidence of the evenings, which sounded poems and excerpts from his poems, romances on his works.
The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by a performance by students of the Irkutsk Theater School "No, I’m not Byron, I’m different" based on the works of M.Yu. Lermontov.
The exhibition will run until the end of December 2015
