The personal exhibition "Moscow Says" of the creative duo "Android Collider", which includes artists Anna Goznaya and Elena Andreeva, is devoted to the concept of understanding the urban space of Moscow.
The exhibition is based on four series: “The Ghosts of Constructivism”, “Hyperboloid of the Engineer Shukhov”, “Red in the City” and “Summer Cottages and Suburbs of Moscow”. All four series are united by the theme of the ratio of the rational and emotional component of the urban environment, the rigid structuring of space and the collapse of urban structures.
It is no coincidence that artists turn to monuments of constructivism. The Shukhov Tower, the Tagansk Automatic Telephone Exchange and many other monuments are a kind of ideal structures that rigidly structure the space, a hymn to the human mind. Recently, the monuments of constructivism are increasingly being reconstructed, beyond recognition, changing the appearance of structures, and even direct destruction. However, the physical destruction of architectural monuments does not mean the destruction of their memory. From a real object that you can touch, which has its physical embodiment, which is soldered to a specific place, an architectural monument turns into a ghost, leaving in the information space.
The series of works “Red in the City” supports the exhibition visitors with a sense of anxiety associated with the manipulative nature of the inscriptions that we regularly see: “Caution, icicles!”, “The passage is closed”. Free movement in urban space is impossible: we must be careful, circumvent, take care. Urban space is fragmented, its fragments become more or less safe for humans. Zones of transition from safe to dangerous space are marked with aggressive red color, causing bright, but not always pleasant connotations.
The fourth series “Cottages and Surroundings of Moscow” is the most lyrical of the presented at the exhibition. “The city is inextricably linked with the country, if there were no city, there would be no summer houses,” the Dachnik magazine stated in the 19th century. This is especially true for such large cities as Moscow. To this day, the townspeople are striving to leave the countryside at any opportunity. As a result, cottages become a kind of flip side of Moscow city life.
Holiday villages, lonely houses, inscribed in landscapes of untouched nature, create a feeling of human impotence. The gradually collapsing abandoned houses demonstrate: how quickly space in the absence of a person returns to its original appearance. It is no coincidence that in a series of artists, so many address the theme of windows. Once created by man, in order to isolate himself from nature on the one hand, and to keep in touch with nature on the other hand, windows gradually break down, and nature absorbs houses created by man for man too.
In their exhibition, artists lead the audience from architectural avant-garde projects to subordinate nature and rigidly structure the space to the victory of nature over human efforts to limit it.
Artists demonstrate their love for Moscow, its heritage, its language. And Moscow speaks in different languages: in the language of rationalism in the era of the avant-garde, in the language of threatening and warning inscriptions, in the language of the destruction of the heritage of the avant-garde, and even, paradoxically, in the language of nature.
