Pictures with the effect of nostalgia - an exhibition of photographs shot with a medium format "soap dish" will open in the Gallery of Classic Photography.
The author used a camera that influenced the development of one of the most popular smartphone apps.
From January 5 to February 20, 2022, the exhibition of photographer Sergei Chubarov "Holga" will be held in the Gallery of Classical Photography. Its exposition will include more than 50 photographs that the author created in the period from 2009 to 2015. Visitors will see atmospheric urban and rural landscapes captured on color and black-and-white films using the Holga analog camera.
The Holga is a cheap medium format camera manufactured in China since the early 1980s. Initially, it was intended for the poor and unassuming residents of the Middle Kingdom and Hong Kong. Later, the plastic "camera for the people" acquired a cult status and gained popularity among photographers due to the "art" quality of photographs.
A camera with soft focus and instagram distortion in retro or lomography style allows you to add a sophisticated aesthetic to your images. Perhaps that is why the photographs taken by the author are so light, as if airy. They seem to "breathe", while each of them has a unique mood and character. These works do not reflect the world as it is, but make it fabulous and magical.
“No earthly thoughts arise from Chubarov’s pictures. Incomprehensible, impossible miracle. Each of the three thousand, ”wrote an enthusiastic admirer of the author.
Many of Chubarov’s color photographs refer to the picturesque "mood landscapes" of the 19th century French artist Camille Corot. However, unlike the famous master, the photographer strove to get an image that would more resemble graphics with its emphasized love for form and plane. “If there is no beauty of form in the frame, then how can we call it a frame at all? I understand artistry for myself as the presence and conscious use of form - there is no form, there is no artistic photography, ”said the photographer.
Sergei formulated the secret of getting the perfect shot as follows: “It can be“ simple ”technical perfection (sharpness, correct light, etc.), and dexterity in frame construction, and the ability to convey a state, and something else… to present a muddy unsharp picture with gaps in the shadows, which, with all this, I can call high-quality, "Chubarov said in an interview.
Sergey Chubarov (1971-2020) - was born and raised in the Tver region. Since 1988 he lived and worked in Zelenograd. Graduated from MIET, was engaged in the development of electronic equipment.
