The historical and documentary exhibition “The Kosygin Phenomenon” was prepared by the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History together with the Ekaterina Culture Foundation. This biographical project is being carried out as part of the exhibition program of the Federal Archival Agency "Leaders of the Soviet Era." The exposition in the halls of the Ekaterina Culture Foundation on the Kuznetsk bridge will tell about the activities of Alexei Nikolaevich Kosygin in the context of the historical era. The objective of this project is to reveal the identity of A.N. Kosygin as an extraordinary person and an outstanding politician, whose biography is inextricably linked with the history of the country. Occupying the highest leadership posts of the USSR in different years, Kosygin was aware of the responsibility entrusted to him and perceived his role primarily as a service to the state and the Soviet people, experiencing all victories and difficulties with the country.
“The exhibition dedicated to my great-grandfather Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin is an unusual and important project for the Fund, the idea of which arose back in 2004, on the 100th anniversary of this outstanding person. For a long time, we thought about how best to approach the implementation of this complex idea and try to tell interesting and modern about the life and work of Kosygin. Our exhibition is dedicated to the unique fate of a man who has gone from a Red Army soldier, a successful cooperator - a gold miner in Siberia, the director of a weaving factory in St. Petersburg, the author of the project "Road of Life" to the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, 40 years in senior government structures. For 16 years, Kosygin was the Head of the Soviet Government, having shown himself in this post as an effective organizer of the economy and a major diplomat, known for his peacemaking initiatives. ”

The exposition includes the originals of archival documents and photographs, items from the personal archive of the Kosygin family, works of art from the largest museum collections, objects of the time, chronicles and video interviews. These sources and evidence reflect the key moments of Kosygin’s biography and the country’s history, tell about the achievements of the Soviet era that were realized directly with his participation: the evacuation of the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad, the solution of the problems of the war economy during the Great Patriotic War, the re-equipment of factories in the post-war period, economic reforms, modernization of industry, the creation of the gas and oil complex of the country and much more.
“Our grandfather Alexei Nikolaevich Kosygin was remembered by us as a serious, courageous and noble person. By nature, he was a leader with a subtle sense of appreciation. Kosygin combined flexibility and the ability to take a principled, unambiguous position. Often this position turned out to be true regarding the people around him, events and circumstances. These properties helped him to successfully defend what he thought was right, in one or another time segment of the history of our country. ”
Scientific adviser, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexey Gvishiani, Tatyana Gvishiani-Kosygina
(grandchildren of A.N. Kosygin)
Working in the Government of the USSR for more than 40 years, Kosygin tried to improve the lives of people. He managed to raise his standard of living - Saturday was a day off, leisure opportunities improved, the transport system developed, the range of consumer goods expanded, some popular Western goods appeared, Soviet television became color and multi-channel, Kosygin reform provided a fund for paying quarterly bonuses and “thirteenth salaries ". The development of the intelligentsia as an important part of society was also one of Kosygin’s priorities. The intelligentsia began to advance to key positions in the country, the level of education of the population grew, the government paid much attention to universities and the Academy of Sciences, which ensured the powerful development of Soviet science in 1960-70. A number of effective economic projects are associated with the name of A.N. Kosygin - the active development of the oil and gas complex, mutually beneficial international cooperation in the field of mining and mineral processing, and the creation of numerous joint ventures. Kosygin was the initiator of the first economic reform under socialism, related to the integration of market elements into the economic system.
The exhibition exposition is built according to the chronological principle and consists of several sections, starting from the childhood of A.N. Kosygin and ending with the section on perpetuating memory. Kosygin’s activities during the Great Patriotic War are highlighted in a separate topic. The most important topics were economic transformation, as well as key international visits of Kosygin and international relations of the USSR during his work as chairman of the Council of Ministers. The family of Alexei Nikolaevich is also dedicated to a separate room.
During the preparation of the exhibition, the staff of the GARF and the Ekaterina Foundation did a lot of research, carefully selected materials from the most important state archives, as well as private archives and collections for the exposition and catalog.
