The Faceless exhibition by contemporary artist Margarita Godgelf will open on April 6 at the Surface Art Laboratory.
The artist grew up in a society with a patriarchal mentality, where everything that moves the world was exclusively in the competence of men. “This paradigm gave me the confidence that gender distribution occurs at the stage of growing up: the most worthy girls have a chance to turn into a man - the crown of evolution, and the rest will grow up as women,” Margarita says about herself.
The psyche of a girl in a patriarchal society from childhood is imperceptibly transformed under the influence of the socio-cultural context, coming in line with the standard module of gender representation. She learns not to broadcast herself, just as at the dawn of the invention of photography, mothers, in order to keep their babies in the frame still and at the same time hide their presence in the photograph, disguised themselves in very peculiar and creepy ways.
Margarita describes the characters in her works in the following way: “The coverage of my heroes allows the viewer to try on his own face on them, thereby feeling himself a full-fledged participant in the plot. Often, we avoid existential encounters with ourselves by broadcasting our alter ego. "
“I separate a person from a biological avatar in order to show his essence without condemnation and idealization, focusing, on the one hand, on the phenomenon of destruction of his internal structure, spiritual dying, the ideology of consumption, and on the other hand, on the eternal unity and opposition of man and space. This subtle play with scale and relativity takes the viewer out of the reality dictated by social conventions. " - writes Margarita.
The artist’s works are in well-known collections in the United States: the Kolodzey Foundation and the Alexander Glezer Museum of Russian Art.
