About the artist: Evgeny Semenov (b. 1960, Pervouralsk, Sverdlovsk Region) is a prominent representative of the Moscow conceptual school, a follower of the discourse begun by “Moscow romantic conceptualism” in the late 60s. In 1978, he graduated from Moscow Art School, then studied at the directing department of VGIK. His first works appear in the early 80s, and exhibition activity begins in 1988, when he works in collaboration with Mikhail Jute, first in Moscow, then in New York. Since 2001 he began to engage in collecting activities. In his collection are various versions of contemporary and antique art. In 2010, the Living Mathematics project was nominated for the Kandinsky Prize. He often works with the so-called “low”: famous “painting standards”, book illustrations, and toys that have moved into kitsch space. In his work he combines conceptualism with figurative painting. The works are included in museum collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the State Center for Contemporary Art. In the context of "contemporary art" the name of Evgeny Semenov is associated with what is called "psychedelic realism."
