The theater and art project "The Christmas Tree at the Ivanovs", which was based on the eponymous work of the famous Russian playwright, poet-oberiut Alexander Vvedensky, is addressed to folk traditions and carnival festive culture. As in the play, the boundaries of reality are blurred here, and transformations and metamorphoses occur around. The images of the project are built on an ironic and paradoxical experience of time in which adults and children exist at the same time, and in a joint game they cheerfully share their age.
As planned by the curator, the exposition is a model of the New Year’s dream, where all the heroes fall asleep, and their lifetime passes into the scenes of another play - “The Tale of Lost Time” by Eugene Schwartz - a magical world of childhood and its unique capabilities.
The project artist, the famous theater designer Sergey Yakunin, creates a special set design for the exhibition, using threads and tissue paper.
Authentic attributes from the Nikulin Moscow Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard (tamers’ wands, curtain, trapeze, clown props), art objects of the main circus artist Andrei Shchelokov, vivid, colorful drawings, collages, art objects of participants in children’s workshops fall into the "fairy kingdom". Galleries "Isopark".
The “Christmas music” for the children’s choir, chamber orchestra and organ of Vladimir Martynov also gives a festive mood.
A separate “cabinet” of the exhibition is dedicated to the first book illustrations for the “Christmas Tree of Ivanovs”, which were performed by the artist Leonid Tishkov in the early 90s. The exposition includes author’s animation based on the play and video recording of the performance reading, where Leonid Tishkov, introducing himself as Alexander Vvedensky in hungry Petrograd, at the same time rewrites by hand and speaks out loud the text “Christmas trees by the Ivanovs”.
The exhibition is accompanied by a large cultural program: cartoon festival, film screenings, the VI International Winter Music Festival “Winter Way”, New Year’s children’s performances, creative workshops, meetings with artists, collective readings of works of the Oberiuts.
