The author of the exhibition “Unconditional Presence” belongs to the generation of artists who are no longer carried away by the spontaneous gesture of an intuitionist, the image of a shaman creator, or the conceptualism quotes that have become bored, or other practices that lead to a loss of visualization. In the case of Ivan Korshunov, we are talking about a radical turn to the style and techniques of the old masters, to biblical themes, to the deepening of artistic time. Using this arsenal of means, the artist presents the current life around him as a sacrament, wrapping it in the form of a parable.
In the coloristic system of some works of the author, a craving for the techniques of 17th century caravagism is found. The space created by Ivan Korshunov is not a set of disparate motifs and artifacts: even in everyday scenes, the artist seeks to convey the unconditional presence of the beginning, endowing everything with meaning. “For me, man is an image and likeness of God, and in the world around me I feel His unconditional presence,” Ivan Korshunov explains. However, the author does not create a utopian world of blessed harmony - the drama of the ideal in the real becomes one of the cross-cutting themes of his exhibition at the Erarta Museum.
Plunging into the atmosphere of the sacrament created by Ivan Korshunov, we gradually begin to feel anxiety: some important battle is lost in heaven, feathers are flying to the ground - “garbage of war”, a frozen angel on a garden bench is covered with a plastic bag, and the motionless look of a revived Goliath, wandering in search of the enemy, rests on the viewer…
It may seem to someone that in the artistic world of Ivan, a parable often borders on a joke, and metaphysics on kitsch. However, be that as it may, the author invites the viewer to a fascinating visual adventure, like traveling by a time machine, promising to meet with large-format painting, rare for today in style and theme.
