Collection of coins of Grand Duke George Mikhailovich in the XIX – XX centuries. served as a starting point for the creation of such an important scientific work as the “Corps of Russian coins of the 18th – 19th centuries. ". The “Corps” has become a kind of periodic table in the world of numismatics and is still the handbook of collectors and researchers of Russian coins. He not only describes the objects of cultural heritage in numismatics, but also contributes to a more detailed study of the connections, processes and facts, representing a more complete understanding of the history of our country. “The case of Russian coins of the XVIII – XIX centuries.”Was not completed during the lifetime of the Grand Duke, but it became the basis of all catalogs of Russian coins compiled over the past 100 years.
It is not possible to collect all the exhibits of the collection today, since during the life and after the death of the Grand Duke they were repeatedly transported, as a result of which the collection was fragmented and scattered throughout the world. A significant part of coins and medals today is in the Smithsonian Institution in the USA, the Paris National Library, as well as in museum collections and private collections in Russia and Europe.
“The upcoming exhibition is a unique cultural event designed to describe, evaluate and present to the general public a part of the best collection of Russian coins of its time - the collection of the Russian collector of Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich from the Romanov family,” - Vagit Alekperov, founder of the Museum of the International Numismatic Club.
Exhibition “August Numismatist. Grand Duke George Mikhailovich. Fate and Heritage ”is designed to help researchers and collectors better understand the spirit of the time, the life story of the Grand Duke, his motives and aspirations as a collector, numismatist and researcher.
