"Pushkin XXI" - a new direction of the Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin. Continuing to work with the classical heritage, the museum begins to form a collection of contemporary art. Any art is modern, and this approach has become the basis of the concept of a new collection, which will include the work of artists already known to museum visitors from past exhibitions, masters of video art, as well as works by a new generation of artists.
The hall presents three works by the Russian art group Provmyza (Galina Myznikova, Sergey Provorov): Despair (2008), Inspiration (2010) and Eternity (2011). The visual codes of these video installations are naturally combined with works from the museum’s permanent exhibition.
Three works - three concepts of time. Eternity, despair, inspiration - remembrance, contemplation, hope. In every part of this triptych, there is anxiety caused by the irrationality of being, or, on the contrary, serenity.
In the work “Eternity”, the image of the immortality of the mind, designed to understand the infinity and incomprehensibility of being, becomes a little girl in a huge career, a child who has not yet felt the fear of an inevitable end. The bizarre structure of the work calls for its non-standard reading. The illogical space of mismatched planes includes allusions to the works of old masters, including the painting “Grotto” by Giacinto Gigante, cyclopic objects of landscapes by Jacob van Geel and the twilight zone of “Collectors of brushwood” by Jean Francois Millet.
In Despair, the artists, spreading visuality, lead us out of the objective world, plunging into a confusion of a snowstorm, dissolving in it the edifying tone of Bruegel skepticism, giving a piercing sound to his warnings. White color is used here as the color of a different reality: the white half of the face of the monstrous giantess Heli, the heroine of Norse mythology; the piercing white figure in the painting "Island of the Dead" by Arnold Böcklin; items packed in "white shrouds" in the works of Dmitry Krasnopevtsev.
The idea of the work “Inspiration” arises from the whimsical aesthetics of the Pre-Raphaelites, where disappointment is in the hope. Nature here is a space of metamorphoses full of signs. The distinct visuality of the artistic language correlates with the techniques of Giovanni Batista Piranesi, with the aesthetics of the teleological vision of twilight forest space in the works of Antonio Pisanello and Pseudo Pierre Francesco Fiorentina from the collection of the Pushkin Museum im. A.S. Pushkin.
Artists recycle familiar images and, at the same time, offer a different, alternative version of well-known works. Using the technique of understatement, they not only engage the viewer emotionally, but at the same time provoke him to independently decipher the structures shown.
