From December 7, 2015 to January 15, 2017 in the Gallery of Classical Photography will be an exhibition of Anna Ostanina "Photography - oil on canvas."
The exposition was made up of several dozens of classic-style photographs made using the unique technology of gum-oil printing.
Anna’s work is the case when the technique of execution is no less important than the skill of shooting. In her photographs, Anna is constantly improving her technique and exploring the world around us through the nature of light and graphics. As a result of a complex process, the image is projected onto the canvas, the image is applied with oil paints, and in several layers. It can take several weeks to produce one print, and the cost of one photo reaches 500 euros. Black-and-white gum-oil printing works are similar to engraving or pencil drawing in old books. Thanks to manual production, each photo is unique. This returns the viewer to monumental themes, gives the impression of the length of the plot in time.
“Photography exists according to the same principles of form-creation as painting, but has its own set of expressive means, methods and tools,” says Anna Ostanina.
Today, around the world, only a few masters work in such a complex technique, the study of which is still ongoing. In Russia, Anna Ostanina is almost the only photographer who is professionally engaged in gum-oil printing. Engaged not so long ago - a few years ago she saw a master class of American photographers, mastered this technique and greatly improved the process, making it more technological.
Work in the technology of gum-oil printing invariably cause an enthusiastic response from the audience. It seems that the portraits carry some special feelings, and the medieval castles of Germany very reliably convey the spirit of the era, but the most spectacular landscapes look simple - the lonely fraternities, the edge of the forest, the old country road. Graphic detail fills the work, and calm tones seem to be brought out by the artist’s experienced hand. We add that the impression of the photo work in this technique seen on the screen does not constitute a small fraction of the effect of viewing the photograph in the museum space.
Anna Ostanina was born in St. Petersburg. Independent art photographer and member of the Union of Photographers since 2009. She graduated from the Faculty of Photography. Halperin at the union of photojournalists.
