The Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents a solo exhibition by Andrei Yesionov, a painter, master of watercolors and draftsman, who has successfully returned to art after more than twenty years. The artist, who “restarted” his creative life in the early 2010s, in just a few years of purposeful and painstaking work in a secluded workshop near Moscow, managed to create an extensive group of new works. Relying on a strong professional background, Esionov sets himself more and more complex plastic tasks, in a sense he is testing the limits of the academic visual language, and it is this paradoxical fusion of self-restraint and inner freedom, discipline and restless imagination that defines his individual artistic style.
The exhibition in the second building of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art on Gogolevsky Boulevard will for the first time fully present large-format watercolors by Esionov: an extremely important artistic practice for him, which he rightly equates by importance to painting. They will be supplemented by special exhibits designed to expand the viewer’s view of the artist’s private space — his drawing tools, photographs, some personal items, as well as video materials.

The exhibition will include various watercolor series by Esionov. These are sheets dedicated to individual countries and cities, depicting the coast of Cyprus, the streets of Moscow, Paris, Berlin and other European capitals on which he traveled. Portrait works will be shown, as well as completely new genre scenes in which the artist focuses on individual motifs that form a peculiar picture of the life of a modern metropolis: mannequins in shop windows, tourist carts, “textured” urban characters - street musicians and ordinary people. Planning along with the crowd, the artist seems to look at the world through an imaginary lens, directs sharpness, moves away and brings his gaze closer, looking at the details. He always compares the figures of people with their architectural, natural or objective environment, thereby providing a semantic key to deciphering seemingly everyday situations, raising them to the level of allegorical utterance.
Esionov brings his analytical approach to work with watercolors, while he always maintains a somewhat distant position, as if observing reflections that appear on the surface of “colored water” only from a distance. The artist creates not spontaneous field studies, as can be decided at first glance, but carefully thought out and built compositions, a kind of “seamless” collages from that rich fine material that is collected in preliminary pencil drawings.
These sketches will also be included in the exposition, accompanying watercolor sheets and revealing the features of the artist’s personal method.
