Starting November 22, the Agitpozeda exhibition, organized jointly with the History of the Fatherland Foundation and the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (GTsMSIR), will be open at the Shabolovka Gallery of the Moscow Exhibition Halls Association. The exhibition "Agitation trains" is dedicated to one of the earliest and most unusual phenomena in Russian culture generated by the revolution. The propaganda trains embodied the key idea for the beginning of the twentieth century, the synthesis of technology and art, combining different functions and images into a new phenomenon - the combination of an exhibition, theater, tribune, cinema and a library on wheels.
In 1918, according to the decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, the first propaganda train ("military-mobile front-line literary train") was prepared and scheduled, passing along the Moscow-Kazan railway. Within two years after this event, 5 trains were issued and sent to different regions, making a total of 19 trips that crossed the country from Odessa to Irkutsk, from Vologda to Baku. The train paintings were managed by the famous graphic artist and painter Ignatius Nivinsky, and all the artistic forces of the country were involved in the work - from symbolists to future avant-garde leaders.
At the exhibition, for the first time, the socio-political role of propaganda trains will be comprehensively presented as the most important tool of power to unite individual regions during the Civil War, as well as the artistic and substantive content of these compositions. This will be shown using archival photographs, posters, documents, books, newsreels, household items from private collections and the collection of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia.
