The cycle of paintings by Valran "Pale Manner" was painted in a "white cube" - a specially constructed space, similar to a stage layout, in which glass vessels are placed. The artist sought to portray silence, silence, a state of peace, tranquility, or rather, to find their visual embodiment. The ideal space for this is the "white cube", as it allows you to get rid of any external expression. Vessels made of transparent glass in such an environment do not break the silence, but rather emphasize it, being clots of light matter that reflects and transmits light through itself.
“Valery Valran continues his research program – one might say, returns to the topic to which he remains faithful for life. Before us are again transparent vessels and liquids, as well as light and a background that can be called space, but not necessarily space in a state of complete readiness: rather, space is given in the process of manufacturing and deployment” / Alexander Sekatsky /.
In previous subject series, the author paid more attention to the objects themselves, and tried to minimize space, abolish it, sometimes leaving detailed objects on an unpainted canvas or painting the background with a uniform color, for example, chromium oxide. In the "Pale Manner" cycle, he experimented with spatial planes - carrier, background, "ceiling", side, painting them in various colors of light tonality, distorting the cubic structure in various ways, getting rid of right angles between horizontal and vertical planes.
“For his new project “Pale Manner”, Valery Valran created a special space - a box in which he removed the front wall, painting the rest in the right color, given just a hint. Glass objects were placed in this ideal stereometry - jars, bottles, flasks, glasses. A clean, sterile world was created, as if intended for scientific research related to optics. Indeed, a series of canvases, painted by the artist on the basis of a three-dimensional model designed for his still lifes, is an experiment that is extremely clear in its logical sequence. Its task is to observe how objects interact with space, with each other and with their reflections, because at a certain stage a mirror appears. It’s not even the outcome that matters here.
Commenting on the result, Valran writes: “When I started this series, I thought about the silence of space or the space of silence and did not imagine that I would reach the looking glass and ghosts. Art is unpremeditated; this is its mysterious task. When you go on a journey, you never know where you will end up.”
