February 12, 2019 in the Exhibition Halls of the Russian Academy of Arts (Prechistenka, 21), the opening of the exhibition of works of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts Vasily Nikolaev "The Space of Myth" will be held. The exhibition will consist of several dozen works of different years, quite fully and concisely characterizing the work of the master.
In the creative biography of the Ryazan artist Vasily Nikolaev a personal exhibition in the halls of the Russian Academy of Arts is a landmark event, a kind of culmination of professional activity. For forty years, personal expositions remain for him the most acceptable form of reflection and reassessment of what was created, noting certain milestones in the creative search of the artist. To date, such exhibitions, there are more than three dozen. The geography of their display is very wide - from Ryazan and Moscow to the cities of Germany, France, England in the west and Kazakhstan in the east.
Vasily Ivanovich Nikolaev was born in 1951 in Kiev. He graduated from the Ryazan Art School (1966-1970) and the Kiev State Art Institute (1970-1976). In 1976, after returning to Ryazan, he taught special subjects at the Ryazan Art School for seven years. At the same time he began to participate in exhibitions of various ranks: All-Union, All-Russian, regional, regional.
Having successfully debuted as an author of paintings and portraits that matched the style of the artists of the 1970s in style, the artist chose to choose an individual path of subjective experience a decade later, relying on his own instinct, taste and erudition. At the turn of the 1980s – 1990s, a number of themes and imaginative decisions, very indirectly related to the current everyday life, clearly emerged in the works of Nikolaev. Heroes of mythology, the saints of the Middle Ages, deserted and full of anxiety, urban views and metaphorical still lifes marked the author’s transition to reality that exists not in sensory experience, but in cultural memory. Reflections on the greatness of past civilizations, on the loss of wholeness and fullness of being received in the works of the artist’s personal interpretation, not pretending to the pathos of social dialogue, but devoid of contemplative calm.
Over the past two decades, mythology, music and theater have constituted an unbroken thematic trinity in the work of Vasily Nikolayev. Like the fragments of long-gone epochs that have come down to us, which form a complex, contradictory interpretation of the past, the gospel scenes, characters of ancient mythology, and ancient buildings are presented in a series of works by the artist. As a rule, they are made as a recognizable, but blurred image.
Remaining an adherent of oil technology, Nikolaev increasingly refuses figurative painting, creating in his compositions a world of pure color rhythms. A variety of textured surface development in his canvases is associated with the dramatic art of a particular image - lyrically-contemplative or dramatically intense.
Each century compares its experience with the past, creates its own myths. The past has no clear boundaries. Perhaps this is why, in the series of works by Nikolayev, there is no rigid scenario. The abstract artistic language of his works of recent years is a gesture of high confidence in the viewer, in which the author assumes artistic flair, the ability to empathize and erudition.
The exhibition runs on March 3, 2019.
