Gravity is a force that cannot be resisted. The artist is constantly in the field of attraction of form, color, technique, painting traditions. Every next generation, trying to free itself from the gravity of accumulated experience and break out of the boundaries of its modern schools, drops shards of destroyed meanings, scraps of canvases and a crumbly baguette alabaster onto the planet. This cultural layer has been accumulating for centuries. But he himself becomes the material for the construction of a staircase to heaven, along which, step by step, the author tries to overcome gravity.
The stylistics of Sergei Mikhankov, with all the unusual and even uniqueness of his creative manner, conceptually echoes the painting of modern metamodernism, in particular English remodernism and Stokism, attracting more and more attention of the art community around the world.
Mikhankov’s painting, in fact, is a window into the unknown, into some new mythology, often resembling icon painting - in the form in which it could exist in some parallel, artistic and dream universes. It is no accident that the words and letters of a language that never existed are often woven into the fabric of the picture, or strange archaeological artifacts that refer to a fabulous past or unknown future. This is most likely some kind of magic, but magic is real art.
