V. Khukhlaev. Millionth Moskvich-408 on the Lenin Hills in a trial run around the city. Moscow, 1967
Valentin Khukhlaev worked for more than 50 years in the leading photo agency TASS Photochronicles of the USSR, having made about a thousand reports on various topics on the editorial assignment. Archive of active and active by nature Valentin Khukhlaev is distinguished by a rare encyclopedia. Since 1946, he filmed the post-war restoration of cities, the achievements of industry and agriculture, Moscow holidays, festivals, foreign trips and much more, which made up the life of a big country. However, Khukhlaev paid special attention to sports competitions, aviation and naval holidays, automobile enterprises - everything that was somehow connected with the theme of the movement. Dynamics, speed, risk - the driving force of his photograph, that is what most clearly showed the nature of the photographer.
Motorsport shooting is one of the most popular sports plots of the 1960s-80s, which is especially entertaining for this sport. In Khukhlaev’s lens, the figures of riders often become silhouettes that leave a trail of long exposure or hang in the white air of a contrast print. This approach refers to the characteristic of the 1960s. passion for the vanguard. Studying at the aviation school and serving as a navigator at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War formed Khukhlaev’s fascination with aviation holidays and competitions, in the shooting of which the desire for black and white rhythm was even more manifested. Valentin Khukhlaev’s lens also includes major rallies, car dealerships, city car parades, car enthusiasts’ holidays, ZIL and AZLK engineering companies, the release of iconic ZISov, Muscovites, as well as genre sketches on the city’s roads — all in a variety of perspectives and artful compositions.
The exhibition also combines the series devoted to the photographer’s movement around the world: the first Soviet cruise around Europe in 1958 and a trip to Africa. In addition to 100 vintage and modern prints, the exhibition will include original author’s collages from photographs, collections of magazine publications and video documentation of sports events.
