FEBRUARY 22, 19.00 PREMIER! OPERA
TRUBADUR by J. Verdi
The plot is borrowed from the play of the same name by the Spanish playwright A. G. Gutierrez (1812–1884), which was successfully staged in Madrid in 1836. This is a typical romantic drama with intricate intrigue and bloody denouement, with indispensable fights, revenge, poison and fatal secrets. Romantic drama attracted Verdi with the brightness of colors, the acuteness of scenic situations, the boiling of passions. The mental stamina, the heroism of the struggle against the dark forces of oppression, embodied in the drama of Gutierrez, excitedly worried Verdi’s compatriots - contemporaries and participants in the liberation movements that shook Italy in the 19th century.
The Troubadour was conceived back in 1850. The completion of the opera was delayed by a number of other works, as well as the sudden death of the librettist. According to the remaining sketches of Kammararano, the end of the third and fourth actions were completed by the young poet L.E. Bardare. The premiere of Troubadour took place on January 19, 1853 in Rome. The opera immediately won universal acclaim. "Troubadour" has become one of Verdi’s most popular works.
