On Wednesday, September 28, the gallery "Peresvetov Lane" will open an exhibition of artist Nina Kotel.
Graphic works of the author of different years will be presented, united by the theme of red color and technique of execution. The exhibition continues the program “Paper Only”, joint with XL PROJECTS, dedicated to contemporary domestic drawing.
Irina Gorlova, art critic: “Nina Kotel’s works are born out of a passion for the subject. The hero of the story can be a pillow or a mirror, a pack of pasta or a paper boat, a clothespin or an eggshell. She is worried about a “good, interesting subject”, which becomes an object of observation, revealing the ability to move, grow, disappear, enter into relationships with others.
Art The boiler is distinguished not only by its amazing ability to notice the unusual in simple things, and not only the ability to turn contemplation into a dramatic action, where mono performances are replaced by multi-figure productions, but also a tough attitude to the "general panorama" of events. The ruthless borders of the paper help her send characters into exile, cut off their swollen bodies, and allow only a fragment of an object “creeping” into space.
The forms selected in the frames unfold in unexpected angles and plans, emphasizing the vital energy of their owners. The artist Kotel is not interested in “dead nature”, but in the “last times” of the heroes, it is no coincidence that the live red color becomes a unifying element in the series presented at the exhibition
Nina Kotel is a Russian artist who works in various techniques: drawing, painting, video, video installations, performance. Born in Kiev, in 1973 graduated from Kiev State Art Institute. Since 1980 he lives and works in Moscow. The works of Nina Kotel are in the collections of Russian museums and cultural centers, in domestic and foreign private collections, including in the collection of the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg.
The “Paper Only” program is not limited to works created exclusively on this “medium”. “Paper” here is a word that traditionally gives rise to an association with painting. And the main emphasis is on the drawings of contemporary artists.
Elena Selina, program curator: “We decided not to adhere to the chronological principle, focusing on the works that are being created“ here and now. ” Indeed, the classic art in process is more honest, interesting, flexible, able to keep the viewer in suspense; and we hope that this program will give the necessary impetus to the study and understanding of domestic drawing in professional circles and will be interesting to the viewer, partly restoring the lost tradition of regular exhibitions of graphic artists that existed in the Soviet era. ”
The “Paper Only” program is designed for several years. The works of the "classics" of contemporary art - Nikita Alekseev, Yuri Albert, Denis Salautin, Boris Matrosov, and young artists - Alexander Povzner, Sveta Shuvaeva and Ilya Dolgova have already been shown.
Larisa Grinberg, Program Manager: “Modern graphics in Russia are under-represented, under-represented, under-studied. This is partly due to the lower commercial potential of graphics compared to painting and sculpture; partly with its lower political potential compared to video and performance. Graphics is a camera phenomenon, not catchy and not noisy. And if so, then many artists work in graphics more freely and spontaneously than in "large forms" - and the graphic turns into a space of utterance that allows you to broadcast and capture the nuances, freedom and optionality of the gesture. It is these properties that make graphics, drawing - the most aesthetic and at the same time relevant phenomenon. ”
