“If the halls of the Hermitage suddenly went crazy, if the paintings of all schools and masters suddenly fell off the nails, entered each other, mixed and filled the room air with a futuristic roar and violent colorful excitement, something like Dante’s Comedy would have turned out.”
Osip Mandelstam. From "Conversations about Dante"
At the end of May 2020, 755 years ago, the greatest poet of the Renaissance Dante Alighieri was born in Florence. It is with him that the countdown begins when the common European culture, science, social life of people began to move and received a giant impetus in their development. Dante’s name is considered to be the origin of such a concept as Humanism.
A reformer of the Italian language and speech, Dante has influenced and continues to influence all European cultures, including Russian.
Composers, artists, philosophers of all nations turned to Dante’s work. Not understood during his life in his homeland in Florence, as is often the case with prophets and poets of all times, Dante ended his life in exile and is buried in Ravenna.
