Dramatic history of Bulgakov’s performance in 1936.
The theatrical behind the scenes opens up before the viewer: the “literary part” with the history and background of the creation of the play “The Cabal of the Saints”; a “sewing shop” with antique mannequins, a sewing machine, sketches of costumes and scenery by Peter Williams; a conditional “scene” where a dramatic plot unfolds: a performance at the Moscow Art Theater and an almost instant ban on it.
Among the exhibits are original documents, photographs, graphics and paintings, memoirs and diary entries, personal items and archival materials from the collections of the Moscow Art Theater Museum, Pushkin House, the Russian State Library, RGASPI, the FSB Archive and the Museum of M.A. Bulgakov.
The historical block continues with unique photographs and costumes from the performances of the country’s leading theaters: the BDT im. G.A. Tovstonogov, Moscow Art Theatre. A.P. Chekhov, Lenkom Mark Zakharov, the Sovremennik Theater and the Theater in the South-West.
