What do cities sound like? How can they be “heard”?
The concert "Surrogate Cities" is dedicated to the phenomenon of the modern metropolis. The city is a symbol of globalization and the center of the unique, the center of production and a place of memory. The music created in the world capitals and dedicated to them interprets these contradictory but inextricable aspects of modern urban culture through sound matter.
Composers from five countries and three continents will be presented with compositions on seven cities, including nightly New York and midday London, imaginary Stockholm and attractive Istanbul, and, of course, Moscow - after a thunderstorm and on the day of festivities.
At the center of the Surrogate Cities program is a play from the Heiner Goebbels cycle of the same name, which for the first time in Russia will be presented not with a theater opus, but with an orchestra composition. Another event of the evening will be the performance of Charles Ives’ play “New York. Central Park in the Dark ”(1906), one of the earliest opuses of the musical avant-garde, which appears on the first pages of anthology on new music.
10 years after the premiere cycle of performances in Europe, for the first time in Moscow, the “Eastanbul” by Vladimir Tarnopolsky will be heard; and Dmitry Kurlandsky will be presented by the Russian premiere of the play "Stockholm" - the most ambitious performance opus from his famous cycle "Maps of nonexistent cities."
There are seven Russian premieres in the program, including works by Steve Reich, Morton Feldman and one of the first performances of the famous Korean composer Unsuk Chin in Russia.
In addition, the Studio of New Music will congratulate the Chamber Choir of the Moscow Conservatory (artistic director - Professor Alexander Solovyov) on this evening, who will perform “The Cries of London” by Luciano Berio. The ensemble guest - Carolina Meltzer (soprano, Germany) will also take part in the concert.
You can congratulate the ensemble and immediately hear your congratulations in sounds before and during the intermission of the concert in the foyer of the stalls, where an interactive installation will be presented. Its authors Nikolai Popov and Alexey Nadzharov are known for their experiments in the field of electronic music.
