XII International Festival-School of Contemporary Art TERRITORIA and the Center for Contemporary Art «Winzavod» present the play «Heritage. Rooms without people «- the joint work of the theater» Vidi-Lausanne «(Switzerland) and the company» Rimini Protocol «(Germany). The authors of the play - Stefan Kagi and Dominik Huber - invite the viewer to go through eight rooms and listen to eight stories of people prepared in advance for their own death, eight messages to us, alive. The performance will be held in partnership with the Contemporary Art Center «Winzavod» in the White House with the support of the Swiss Council for Culture in Moscow. About Helvetia.
Truckers and janitors, prostitutes and builders, high technologies and low thoughts - perhaps there is no such topic in the world for which Stefan Kagi and Rimini Protocol would take the risk. This time they turned to the theme of death, putting in Lausanne a play about preparations for leaving for another world.
What will remain of me when my physical body disappears? How did I live my life? What will happen to the loved ones after my death? Will they remember me? How many years will this memory last?
We are used to thinking that no matter how much you prepare for death, you will not be able to meet it fully armed. But the authors of the scenic installation «Heritage. Rooms without people «decided to help the living to understand what it’s like to die. For two whole years the staging group traveled around Switzerland (a country with an amazing life expectancy and a mass of legal ways of leaving it), talking to doctors and funeral workers, lawyers and neurologists, employees of old people’s homes and priests. With the results of this communication, you can now get acquainted in eight rooms devoted to eight stories of relationships with death. A lonely pensioner and a desperate jumper, an ex-ambassador in Africa and a comic artist, a bourgeois married couple and a serious scientist - none of them go «on stage», but everyone tells their stories through video, photos, personal things, etc.
A common joke about the fact that the «Rimini Protocol» is called a theater only because it is not music, painting or cinema, just a joke. Created in 2002 by three graduates of the Institute of Applied Theater Studies, the theatrical company for 15 years of its existence gained fame as the main innovator of the European theater. Rimini works in all conceivable formats and genres, but whatever they put up - a «brodilka», flashmob or a documentary play - Kagi, Wetzel and Haug are always very serious about the matter and conduct an obligatory «field» study. In Moscow, the company «Rimini Protocol» is known, first of all, as the authors of the best-selling performances - Remote Moscow and Cargo Moscow.
«Performance» Heritage. Rooms without people «is an attempt to describe not death, but that way to it, which each of us sooner or later will have to go through. Is it possible to depict the absence of anything? How can I tell you that soon there will be nothing to say, because the story will end? «
Olga Gerdt in the newspaper Vedomosti:
«It’s better, of course, not to talk about what happens behind every closed door. And not because it will be «not interesting» - it’s «not interesting» by definition: you will not cheer and melodramas also do not have to wait. The statement, the protocol, the volumetric installation of personal human files. It is impossible to tell because all this must be experienced personally. «
The performance is in English and French with Russian subtitles.
The premiere took place on September 14, 2016 in the theater «Vidi-Lausanne», Switzerland.
