The State Historical Museum opens the exhibition “Treasures of Regimental Museums”, presenting military relics of the Russian army of the 18th – early 20th centuries.
The Historical Museum opens the exhibition “Treasures of Regimental Museums”, which will present relics of military history from regimental museums, officer collections and personal collections.
From the middle of the 18th century. In many units of the Russian army, small collections of items significant for the military unit were spontaneously formed, among which were old banners, trophies, awards, and weapons. Particularly valuable relics were often preserved in regimental churches. Such collections later became the basis of the collections of regimental museums.
The large-scale exhibition project of the Historical Museum covers four themes: “Regimental traditions”, “Officers’ meeting”, “Under the highest patronage”, “The battle path and the heroes of the regiment”. The exhibition will feature monuments that were the pride of each military unit: regimental banners, trophies, collective and personal awards, including St. George’s silver trumpets, award weapons, personalized crosses; uniforms, personal belongings and portraits of the highest chiefs; regimental silver and much more. Visitors will learn about regimental holidays and stories; traditions of education and training of regiment ranks; They will see personal belongings of the Romanov family related to the history of the regiments.
“The new exhibition project of the Historical Museum aims to provide the visitor with the opportunity, through memorial objects, to gain a unique experience of touching the heroic history of the Russian imperial army and navy. A special place in the exhibition is given to the theme dedicated to the heroes and combat path of a number of military units. Battle painting, collective awards, trophies - all this is evidence of the glorious pages of the military history of our state,” says General Director of the State Historical Museum Alexey Levykin.
The exhibition will be of interest not only to people deeply immersed in military issues, but also to a wide range of lovers of Russian history. Regimental relics impress not only with their historical value, but also with their craftsmanship. The most famous masters of their time worked on precious items for officers’ meetings, and their walls were decorated with works of first-class painters.
Each exhibit presented at the exhibition has its own unique history. Behind one is human destiny, behind another is the heroic history of a military unit, behind the third are centuries-old regimental rituals and traditions. And all of them are a vital part of the corporate culture of the Russian Imperial Army.
The connecting element of the exhibition is a multimedia information system containing detailed information about the objects presented, persons mentioned, events and regiments from the era of Peter I to Nicholas II. In addition, it contains photographs from the late 19th – early 20th centuries related to the daily life of the army. Their subjects are varied: the oath, maneuvers, parades, officer leisure, holidays, anniversaries, regimental bands, ceremonies and much more. The information system will also be available on the online resources of the Historical Museum.
