The Alisa Gallery opens a solo exhibition of Sophia Skidan, which will be based on new digital collages collected from the author’s landscape photographs, photographs of sculptures and landscape fragments created by the artist of imaginary worlds. The exhibition will also include new sculptures, in which objects found in nature are harmoniously combined with materials invented by man, forming a new plastic language, which expresses a not entirely human perception of modern reality.
In this project, the artist combines the achievements of the last years of practice. Photos, smells and sculptures are connected by a poetic thread of fragments of imaginary and / or real memories, "which stick together, but become tangible."
“In these works, the spaces of nature, sculptures flow into photographs and from photographs move back to the material,” says Sophia Skidan. There is no homogeneity in my works, historical and private memory mutate, through them natural landscapes, mystical phenomena, pieces of bodies, textures, casts and sculptures are formed into imaginary metaworlds. They might never exist or are already transforming into the landscape of the nearest magical, mystical and / or hypothetical future. "
Through her works, Sophia Skidan proposes to consider the memory of not always living bodies, their density and fatigue in new temporal registers, in which the present is determined from the future, and therefore turns out to be the past with which we cannot do anything.
Sofia Skidan @sofskidan (b. 1996, Ukhta) graduated from St. Rodchenko. Works with installation, performance, sculpture and video. At the center of her artistic research are questions about perceptions and transformations of identities in the context of technogenic culture, environmental instability and the Anthropocene. Skidan is a scholarship holder of the Garage Museum (2019/2020), a nominee for the Kuryokhin Prize in the Best Visual Art category in 2018, a participant in the Porto Design Biennale 2021, the Rosbank Future Cities and Archstoyanie festivals in 2021, 6th and 7th Moscow Youth Biennale, as well as exhibitions in the Darwin Museum, Garage Museum, MMOMA, MAMM, Center for Contemporary Art Printing House. The artist’s personal exhibitions were held at the Rodchenko school (Dynamic pieces, 2016) and the Fragment gallery (Transverse hyperspace, 2018).
Her work is a site-specific installation, in which artifacts of post-digital reality are combined with elements of a lost landscape, and Eastern spiritual practices - with modern Western critical theory, reflecting the complex problems of our time.
