The exhibition Hidden Stream of Colors, organized by the Italian Institute of Culture in Moscow in cooperation with the Russian Academy of Arts, presents works dedicated to the theme of water by the famous Italian photographer Marcella Simonelli.
Marcella Simonelli was born in 1955 in Naples. There she studied at the Faculty of Law, and in 1979, on the occasion of her graduation, she received her first camera as a gift. According to the photographer, the camera changed her life, forcing her to look at the world in a new way. Landscapes and architecture became favorite subjects for shooting, through which the author sought to convey the atmosphere of the place and her own emotions. Love for details, rich colors and contrasts led to a passion for the water element. The theme of water has taken one of the main places in the work of Marcella Simonelli. Fascinated by the play of light on its surface, capturing the various rhythms of the movement of waves, the author makes an attempt to fix those states that can most accurately express the essence of this element and convey to the viewer the emotions experienced during contemplation.
As you know, water is a source of life and energy, beauty and well-being, a bridge connecting countries and people. The surface of the water and the reflections on it are sometimes only a flat background, and sometimes they suddenly come into motion and are covered with a small pattern with endless shades, similar to brush strokes of an artist. Passing reality through itself, water reflects it from a different angle, changing our perception of the world around us. The photographer is convinced that while preserving its nature, but constantly transforming, water also reflects the inner world of a person: elusive and constantly moving.
The authors of the exposition offer to reflect on many important topics: beauty, life, the world around us, rights and inequalities, salvation and hope. One of the goals of the exhibition is to achieve the effect of complete immersion of the viewer in visual, sound and emotional vibrations. “Sounds and colors are vibrational phenomena of the same nature, the receptors of which are humans: colors are perceived faster than sounds, but, in the end, it is vibration that causes our emotions” (Maurice Touzet).
At a creative meeting with the author of the works and the curator of the exhibition, which will take place in early March, the performance of the Italian musician is planned, using a unique musical instrument that imitates the sounds of moving water.
