The St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the People’s Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler will present the Seventh Symphony Marathon. His hero will be Robert Schumann. On December 5, on the stage of the State Academic Capella, the orchestra will perform four famous symphonies of the great composer and two unfinished symphonies, which are rarely performed in Russia.
A German composer, pianist, teacher, Schumann is better known to the Russian public as the author of piano works - the more interesting it is to see new facets of his mastery. For many years the composer wrote only for the piano, not noticing other instruments. But when in 1941 he discovered the orchestra, he composed for days on end, calling his condition "symphonic ardor".
In the genre of symphony, Schumann is the heir to the Beethoven tradition. He puts his phenomenal melody into classical forms, and the music of his symphonies is sublime and filled with incredible expression.
The first "Spring" symphony was written under the impression of a romantic poem by Adolf Böttger. The Second Symphony is rightfully considered one of Schumann’s brightest works. The famous Third, known as the "Rhine", is inspired by the medieval images of the magnificent Gothic cathedral in Cologne. The fourth symphony, which the author himself called "symphonic fantasy", will be performed in a later version. All over the world, these works are incredibly popular.
The concert will also feature the surviving first movement of the youthful symphony “Zwickau” and “Overture, Scherzo and Finale”, which Sergei Stadler added with a slow part from Schumann’s legacy to a complete symphonic cycle.
Let us remind you that the Schumann. All Symphonies ”is not the first educational project of the People’s Artist of Russia Sergei Stadler. Previous Symphonic Marathons were dedicated to the creative legacy of Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Schubert. These concerts, unprecedented in duration, had a great resonance in the media and among connoisseurs of musical art. The projects of the People’s Artist of Russia, conductor and violinist Sergei Stadler carry not only educational and cultural significance, but also have great social significance. Students, schoolchildren and retirees had the opportunity to attend concerts of the cycle at discounted prices, part of the tickets were distributed through municipal and veteran organizations.
