The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center and the MosArt Foundation present the exhibition-installation “Sheintsis. Essays in four scenes ”. An installation is an artistic action that is created collectively by a group of artists from different directions. All of them are united by the memory of the outstanding stage designer, teacher of the Moscow Art Theater School, friend - Oleg Sheintsis.
An attempt to convey the feeling of the phenomenon of Oleg Sheintsis was made in the very title of the exhibition. The essay, the creators explain, is an individual artistic experience, but its characteristic free form of presentation is a concept here. The composition of the exhibition consists of four parts, united by a common artistic concept. The exhibition is fundamentally not connected with any memorable date from the personal or creative life of Sheintsis. The idea of creation is the personal impressions of the authors, expressed in scenographic form. That is why, for example, some of the models by O. A. Sheintsis, which were provided by the A. A. Bakhrushin Theater Museum, were used not for the exhibition, but for the installation.
A video installation deserves special mention, in which Igor Yasulovich, Mikhail Shvydkoy, Dmitry Krymov, Igor Zolotovitsky, Pavel Kaplevich, Sergey Chonishvili, Dmitry Rodionov, Vladimir Urin, Stanislav Benediktov and other colleagues and associates of the artist remember about Oleg Sheintsis. Specially for this project, sound engineer Ivan Shirshov created an original author’s soundtrack.
“Oleg Sheintsis has never been a simple performer, namely, a full-fledged co-author. He was a real reformer of the stage space, his ideas were unexpected, his artistic aesthetics, in fact, revolutionary. - says the Chairman of the STD RF Alexander Kalyagin, - He was also a great teacher. When you think how much he managed to do, it becomes even more obvious how much he still had to do… He passed away very early, he was only 57 years old. I admired each of his performances, considered him one of the best set designers in the country, but did not have time to admit it. It so happens that we are in no hurry to say the main words, we put it off, and then it gets late. "
Oleg Sheintsis is known to a wide audience mainly for his joint work with Mark Zakharov at the Lenkom Theater. His track record includes the decoration of 23 performances of the repertoire of this theater, including the well-known theatrical hits "Juno and Avos", "Memorial Prayer", "Optimistic Tragedy", "Three Girls in Blue", "The Seagull" and many others…
In working on the space of each performance, Sheintsis systematically invented new techniques that have become classic today. Sheintsis was the first to use laser and dry ice in the theater; he was the first to "inscribe" the most complex moving scenery with many changes into the stage of Lenkom, which was rather modestly equipped for this. It was Sheintsis who invented the image of the "Golden Mask", which to this day remains the corporate identity and symbol of the largest national theater award in our country and the highest distinction in the theatrical profession. His authorship also belongs to the creation of a corporate logo for the International Theater Festival. A.P. Chekhov.
Oleg Sheintsis was extremely intolerant of vulgarity, working with down sleeves, trash work, indifference, his colleagues and students recall. This exhibition "grows" out of a sense of an acute shortage of such a figure as Sheintsis in modern life, out of the absence of his characteristic reflection on the artist’s place in the modern world.
This exhibition could not have taken place without the support of the Moscow Theater "Lenkom Mark Zakharov", the Union of Theater Workers of Russia, the AA Bakhrushin Theater Museum, the Moscow Art Theater School, the Theater. Eug. Vakhtangov, the National Theater Award and the Golden Mask Festival, the MosArt Foundation, as well as the wife of Oleg Aronovich Sheintsis - Lyudmila Grigorievna Kuzmenko.
The entrance to the exhibition is free.
