Alexander Kondratiev, artist, founder of the group “Sh.V.A”
The unofficial art life of Leningrad in the early eighties was as follows: the older generation of artists came out of the "underground" (my teacher ventured into a number of exhibitions in the Baltic states), young people stuck together in groups around various authorities. The elders instructed, the youth absorbed. But there were schools where, literally, classes were taught. For example, Yu.A. Nashivochnikov with a group of students developed the ideas of O.A. Sidlin. I continued the traditions of the Dugugach-Zaitsevskaya school, strongly flattering it with cube-futuristic ideas and non-standard spatial-perspective constructions. The result of these studies were several generations of artists, united in the group "Nomad", "Sh.V.A. ”, Some of them worked independently, some worked together with artists close to us. For example, with the group "Balance".
If “Nomad” has a monolithic character inherent in their ideology in the artistic language and figuratively-plot plan, then the group “Sh.V.A.”More free in the interpretation of forms, the choice of subjects and genres. In contrast to the archetypal images of the nomad group, the painting Sh.V.A. ”Turned to the personal qualities of their heroes. Experiments with a picturesque surface, texture, brought representatives of "Sh.V.A.”To the use of non-traditional materials: corrugated cardboard (E. Gladkaya, K. Burlankova), geotextiles (E. Bocharova), or even to electromechanical systems using wires, bulbs, etc. (K. Agranovsky). Game shocking and provocative, along with hidden geometric constructions (the legacy of the Zaitsevskaya analytical school) makes the viewer experience conflicting emotions. The portrait genre turns into irony and even grotesque. The sizes of the formats also play an important role: suddenly a portrait grows to the ceiling, forcing itself to be respected, if only for that. Such a noble, and, one might say, sublime genre, like a nude, is also subjected to ironic barbs and even feminine evil barbs. Nude, in fact, is the order of the male half of humanity, so admire what we are viper-vipers in all its glory! This also applies to that series of works “Naked Sh.V.A. "Where they depict themselves, or each other. Here passions, irony and self-irony boil. The philosophical subtext is not obvious to the viewer, but if it weren’t for him, all this might seem ridiculous. A forest of power transmission towers, burning light bulbs, blue proletarians running to some place, or a nude in a bra and panties in a pinched pose, pasted over with pictures of beautiful life, self-satisfied, well-fed handsome men and full-bodied beauties torn into two horizontal parts, drenched with paint and skukenenye geotextile panels with pierced in them with chipped chips of boards, representing trees, going branches to the upper canvas, and down to the dark red panel - the earth, and there, under the roots, what ultimately remains after us is the skeleton. You can be ironic on this subject as much as you like, but the chill of eternity slightly touches your soul.
The difficult years of the perestroika and post-perestroika periods left their mark on the art of St. Petersburg, and the group “Sh.V.A” was no exception.
