On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of the famous lyric tenor of the 20th century, the Gilyarovsky Center, a branch of the Museum of Moscow, is opening the exhibition “Sergey Lemeshev. Kumir and his time.
Sergei Lemeshev was born into a peasant family in 1902, and if not for the revolutionary upheavals, he would hardly have become an artist. Lemeshev came to art after the October Revolution, when the rapidly changing life of the country opened up new opportunities for people from the poorest social classes.
The role of Vladimir Lensky in the opera Eugene Onegin brought fame to Lemeshev. For more than 30 years he was a soloist of the Bolshoi Theater, and on November 13, 1965 he sang the part of Lensky for the five hundredth time. The name of this singer in Soviet times was known to almost everyone: a whole army of fans followed their idol everywhere. It is no coincidence that Lemeshev is considered one of the first artists with his own fan club. "Lemeshists" still gather at the singer’s house on Tverskaya Street on his birthday.
The exhibition at the Gilyarovsky Center will tell you what the secret of Lemeshevsky’s success is: what was more in him - talent, diligence or luck? For the first time, the exposition will feature items from the personal collection of the singer and his wife Vera Kudryavtseva - favorite things, books, gifts from fans.
