Erarta Museum of Modern Art presents an exhibition by artist Sergei Filatov - a special acoustic environment created by an ensemble of sound sculptures.
Visitors to the Erarta Museum will be able to get acquainted with the work of Sergei Filatov, participant in the main program of the 58th Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art. He undertook the first experiments with sound in 2000, in parallel with active work in the field of fine art. Spiritual searches, travels to India and Nepal led to the fact that the artist became interested in the music of ancient cultures and began to more sensitively perceive the surrounding audio events. This experience prompted him to work on authorial musical instruments - sounding objects with new timbre shades and forms of embodiment, based on alternative methods of sound production.
At an exhibition in the Erart Museum, Sergey Filatov “designs” a sound landscape in which each object generates real-time sound through the use of various technologies. The algorithms prescribed by the artist determine the behavior of the controllers, which, in turn, affect the formation of an alternating magnetic field or cause the contact of structural elements. Despite the fact that the sound of each object is “programmed” by the author, the work that we hear is in some way improvisation: each point in space is heard in its own way, so the ability to perceive the installation as a whole becomes very conditional. The unique ability of hearing to pick up phantom sounds between signals coming from different sides connects the “tracks” of different objects, creating a single sound space.
The sculptures of Sergei Filatov embody the principle of multidimensionality and continuous variability, characteristic of natural phenomena. Presented as a total sound installation, they organize sound in space, building a specific sound architecture. The key to perceiving the environment created by the artist is a conscious approach to their own auditory experiences and comparing them with existing experience. Visitors to the Erarta Museum will be able to verify this from August 8 to November 3, 2019. Entrance to the SonoContour: Sound Architecture exhibition is free for owners of Subscriptions to the Erarta Museum.
