About the artists of the Satel dynasty.
The head of the family, Georgy Satel, was born March 25, 1917 in Moscow in the family of a professor at MVTU im. Bauman Eduard Adamovich Satel, Russified Frenchman, a major engineer who during the years of World War II became one of the organizers of the Soviet military industry. Mother - Lydia Satel, nee Lapina, was an actress, then until the end of her life as a theater teacher. Since childhood, Georgy was fond of painting, he learned to draw in the children’s studio of the Palace of Culture of the Moscow Automobile Plant. In 1938 he entered the Surikov Art Institute, where his teachers were such outstanding artists as A. V. Lentulov and P. D. Pokarzhevsky. Great influence on the work of George had his older friend - the famous Soviet painter Yuri Pimenov.
George traveled a lot around the country - on his canvases Central Asia, the Volga region, beautiful views of small Russian rivers. But his greatest love is Moscow. In 1947, he participated in an exhibition dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Moscow, and in 1951 his paintings were awarded the Stalin (State) Prize. At the end of 2004, the Central House of Artists hosted a personal exhibition of Georgy Satel with the symbolic name “Far Forties” at this exhibition, viewers could see what military and post-war Moscow looked like, its avenues, squares, historical buildings, as well as admire the stanitsa monuments of ancient Samarkand. The hospitable Uzbek people during the Great Patriotic War gave shelter to many evacuated residents of distant Russia, including student George Satel and his young wife, artist Shurochka Kolganova, whom he married before the war itself. Here in Samarkand in 1942 the son Alexander was born, who also became an artist.
Alexander Satel represents the Soviet avant-garde of the 70s. He works in his own individual style, in which conventionality and abstraction are fantastically combined with classical realism, which is especially noticeable in his still lifes, historical and battle paintings. It also works in other genres in a peculiar way. Alexander is the author of a unique technique of "tapestry writing", which he uses in all genres - in still lifes, urban historical landscapes, battle scenes, lyrical and romantic canvases.
The daughter of Alexander Satel is Catherine, a restoration artist and teacher. She teaches at the School of Memory of 1905, where her grandmother, Alexandra Kolganova, once studied. Ekaterina Satel’s personal contribution was awarded with diplomas and a prize of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for the restoration and preservation of unique historical and cultural monuments. Ekaterina Satel was awarded the Moscow Government Prize in the field of culture in the Russian Federation in the nomination “For Contribution to the Development of the Culture of the City of Moscow”.
