More about the cycle:
For more than 100 years, fashion photography has been expanding its borders, intruding on "high art", reportage and amateur photography. The language of fashion photography is very flexible. She interacts with fashion, mass culture, large glossy magazines. At the same time, photographers become a link between the art of museums (classical and modern) and the mass audience. Everything that happens in society and culture, immediately or a little later, is reflected in fashion photography. It is like a litmus test: new technologies, the emergence of movie stars and subcultures, the “promotion” of popular artists, politics, changes in the family structure - everything new and relevant falls into glossy magazines, but not in a radical, sharp, but more relaxed, more understandable audience, often entertaining. There is an eclectic approach, free play with quotes, openness to the new and at the same time dependent on the viewer and the desire to please him. How photographers balance on the verge of commercial and artistic, how they play with "great art", while remaining part of mass culture - this will be discussed in 5 lectures of this course, devoted to European and American photography of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
Lecture 1. The birth of glamor in fashion photography
The story begins at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when glamor was in “childhood”. We will see how photography became part of fashion magazines, how it evolved from a picturesque and decorative style to a more rigorous one, to neoclassicism and art deco. The focus is not only on Baron Adolph de Meyer and Edward Steichen, but also on the first women to influence fashion photography to “direct” their image in the photographer’s studio - Countess Castiglione and Marquise Casati. We will also look at the “classic” photographers of Horst P. Horst and Cecil Beaton.
